I was gonna say All In The Family, when Archie was sick, but I don't think he had a bell.
I think he was just yelling down the stairs.

Wasn't there a Simpsons episode where Bart pretends to be sick and rings a bell so Marge will come and bring him more ice cream? Or am I imagining the bell?

Just confirmed - Charles Nelson Reilly did have a bell, which he did not hesitate to use when things didn't go his way, as seen here.

Hector Salamanca had a more mobile variation in Breaking Bad, it might be an old shtick , but it was used a lot in that show. It was pretty funny at first.

I think there was a Monk episode like this, also maybe a Frasier.

I was thinking more along the lines of The Simpsons when Mr. Burns summoned Homer all the way from home because his phone was ringing, but now that I remember it, it was just Homer that put up with it.

This was used once on Frasier. Maris was ringing a bell, but Niles says its only a game they play and he ignores it, then you hear an air horn and then Niles says "now she means business"

I have a vague memory of a an episode of a show where one of the characters had laryngitis (or had recently had throat surgery) and could only communicate by ringing a little bell.

I swear, this was the first thing I thought of... heh.

Home Improvement probably did a show or two with this plot.. probably involving to Al's mother.

13 minutes in the kids go nuts with bells and whistles.

  18. How odd... I caught part of an episode of My Wife And Kids just yesterday that featured this device!

The kids summoning their parents on that Brady Bunch episode was actually pretty tame. The show I'm trying to remember was more of a repetitive ringing throughout the episode so that the other character was going bonkers.

Sounds like an episode from nearly every sitcom ever.
