Beware - as far as I know this is one of those European public-domain labels that have no access to the original masters.
Yes, sorry, looking at the ad again it looks like Discovery are distributors and Phono is the label. And yes I accept it's almost certainly a European PD label.
Art Farmer - Farmer's Market (New Jazz) mono purple label, DG, RVG pressing Had to spin this again today, very happy to have acquired this yesterday.
Ben Webster - Soulville. Briefly played side 1 of the AP 45 rpm vinyl now playing the full US original silver face CD. Every time I do one of these little vinyl and CD comparisons (noting belabored) I'm more amazed at how good this DAC is. As far as the music goes this is a top 5 Verve album for me.
The Jazztet at Birdhouse (Argo) grey mono pressing. This has another version of the track Farmer's Market on it.
Chet Baker The Touch of Your Lips Steeplechase, 1986 with Doug Raney, guitar Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass Baker is still playing very well here. My copy must be worth more because it has a typo on the cover. It says The Touch of Yours Lips.
Been away from The Beat for most of the summer because it is my busy work season, but trying to reduce stress by trying to catch up (impossible). Lazy Saturday while I go through my usual mountain of emails: From This: Listening to on this: Lovely sound, great bands from multiple sessions but an insane lineup throughout that represents the who's who of jazz (Mingus, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cleveland, Zoot Sims etc etc). Really, I think this is a vastly underrated era and set of music. Too bad the Mosaic is gone. Fun picture of Q:
(CD Sketch Records SKE-333017) .... recorded June 2000 .... majestic and well structured solo piano performance by french BeBop veteran Rene Urtreger .... the sound quality of this session cut at Studios La Buissonne is fabulous to say the least (actually the same applies to the Mal Waldron Sketch platter presented earlier today - also recorded there) .... hard to be found nowadays (there should be a chance via Atelier Sawano) - but well worth in-depth investigations ....
The Horace Silver Quintet & Trio - Blowin' The Blues Away Horace Silver, piano; Blue Mitchel, trumpet; Junior Cook, tenor sax; Eugene Taylor, bass; Louis Hayes, drums.
A new compilation of Monday's material selected by Monday. I didn't have all of this, and boy it's a nice sounding collection. And for a Monday release, cheap. Monday Michiru : Portraits In Time – 2002 to 2013 (CD) » http://www.*******.eu/uploads/posts/2016-04/1460731447_front.jpg
Caught Pat Martino at the Jazz Standard on Thursday. He's got his usual organ trio, but this gig is augmented with a tenor sax & trumpet. If you like hard bop/souljazz, this was quite a lot of fun, plenty of good solos and the band swung really hard. I loved it, a known quantity executed beautifully.
