Could you be more specific pls. What does it mean dubbed from the original tapes with dolby A? THank you.
Reportedly UA sent the tapes which were dubbed from the original two track master tapes using dolby A NR to King Records in the 70's and eventually they were taken over by Toshiba.
It is told that when the staffs at Toshiba listened the tapes for the first time, they were surprised by the sound since it was quite different from what they have expected from the experiences with the BN vinyl cut by RVG and they tried to mimic the 'BN sound' as much as they could.
I don't own a lot of Japanese vinyl but I have found masterings to be a crapshoot in terms of overall sound quality. General consensus is that later non-original pressings are not quite as good sounding as original UK pressings. I had original Japanese first pressings of U2 Boy, David Bowie - Low, and reissues such as Beatles lp's on Apple and some 70's Stones London reissues, all of them were a bit inferior sounding to original UK pressings of same titles (albeit with surface noise, occasional pops etc - the usual tradeoff between Japanese and non-Japanese pressings). However I have a 2nd issue Moody Blues 'Days Of Future Passed' w/sunset cover from 1970 and it sounds superb, as good as the early 70's UK pressing I have (original mix). But I also have a later Japanese reissue of the same title that was issued in the late 70's and it sounds awful. Like I said, crapshoot.
I just found a Japan issue of The Who "It's Hard" in my collection that has TML stampers. I've got about 500+ Japanese lps to check out now......
Yes! Yes! Yes! It is a big one! I found a copy and bought it today. Luckily it is not that expensive. And it's a mint copy. This album is one of my best favorites of Neil Young and is one of the most natural sounding rock'n roll vinyl to me. It may be the problem that the US vinyl is a bit noisy. I guess it is very noisy for the nature of the performance. And I managed to make the original US vinyl less noisy after many hours of cleaning. But this is pressed on dead quiet vinyl TBW. Thank you for the heads up.
So to date we have... Tusk – Fleetwood Mac Rumours – Fleetwood Mac Tango In The Night – Fleetwood Mac Tonight’s The Night – Neil Young Zuma – Neil Young Hearts & Bones – Paul Simon It’s Hard – The Who The Stranger – Billy Joel 90210 – Yes The Nightfly – Donald Fagan Bop Till You Drop – Ry Cooder Anybody got any more? JG
Just picked up an absolutely mint Japanese pressing of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, it has US stamper information the same as the US LP. €25 a steal I reckon. JG
I will add that in many countries around the world ABBA's final Lp "The Visitors" was mastered in Sweden. The lead out groove area is stamped "Cutting Room Sweden." I have original US, German and Japanese pressings of "The Visitors" and all are stamped the same way. I would venture to guess the UK and other major music market countries were all sent masters to use that were cut in Sweden. This was done most likely because the album was "digitally recorded and mixed" (though the complete story of that claim is interesting) and they wanted to give as consistent quality as possible to these markets.
First time poster here. Great thread, I have Japanese pressed Eagles - Long Run and it is indeed spectacular. I also have Rolling Stones - Some Girls (ESS-81050) that has a Sterling stamp on the deadwax, but does not have the same info as my Sterling TJ Monarch pressing. The detail and sound on this Japanese pressing is very nice.
Sorry.... I've been sidelined with some medical issues, but I'll be back on the straight and narrow real soon
Here's a pair of Allman Brothers lps: Live Fillmore East JVC VIP-9507-8 (Japan '76) Capricorn 2CX-0131 (U.S. '74) Beginnings JVC VIP-9505-6 (Japan '76) Capricorn/Atco 2CX-0132 (U.S. '74)
Yes, today I bought a Japan Polydor pressing of The Who - It's Hard, 28MM 0220 ¥2,800. It's got "TML-S" (side one) and "TML-M" (side two) stamped in the deadwax. Both sides also feature the Sheffield Lab Matrix codes where the lacquers were processed. So, it appears to feature the original Mastering Lab mastering by Doug Sax. The sound is very impressive.
I picked up an absolutely mint Japanese pressing of Fleetwood Mac's Mirage. The deadwax info has US stampers along with IAM (International Automative Media) and BL (handwritten, superimposed on each other) Bruce Leek. The sleevenotes say it was mastered at Precision Lacquer by Steven Marcusson and Larry Emerine, Discogs has two US masterings listed... IAM and Precision. So, is there two masterings of this LP? JG
I would love to see this list expand. Any members got Japanese vinyl with US stampers they could post. So to date we have... Tusk – Fleetwood Mac Rumours – Fleetwood Mac Mirage - Fleetwood Mac Tango In The Night – Fleetwood Mac Tonight’s The Night – Neil Young Zuma – Neil Young The Long Run - The Eagles Hearts & Bones – Paul Simon It’s Hard – The Who The Stranger – Billy Joel 90210 – Yes The Nightfly – Donald Fagan Bop Till You Drop – Ry Cooder Live Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers Capricorn 2CX-0131 (U.S. '74) Beginnings - The Allman Brothers -Capricorn/Atco 2CX-0132 (U.S. '74) Some Girls - Rolling Stones (Sterling) JG
The only Japanese pressings I ever bought were the Beatles "Let It Be" & "Abbey Road" stereo CDs to accompany my 2009 CD mono box set. They sounded a tad better than the 2009 stereo CDs. Never owned any Japanese vinyl to my recollection......
Here you go... Tusk – Fleetwood Mac Rumours – Fleetwood Mac Mirage - Fleetwood Mac Tango In The Night – Fleetwood Mac Tonight’s The Night – Neil Young Zuma – Neil Young The Long Run - The Eagles (Sterling) Hearts & Bones – Paul Simon It’s Hard – The Who (TML) The Stranger – Billy Joel 90210 – Yes (Masterdisk RL) The Nightfly – Donald Fagan (Masterdisk RL) Bop Till You Drop – Ry Cooder Live Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers Capricorn 2CX-0131 (U.S. '74) Beginnings - The Allman Brothers -Capricorn/Atco 2CX-0132 (U.S. '74) Some Girls - Rolling Stones (Sterling) Presence - Led Zeppelin The Song Remains the Same - Led Zeppelin JG
Yesterday I picked up a mint copy of Yes 90125 (for €20) with MASTERDISK RL on both sides. Just noticed I had wrongly listed the Yes LP as 90210. So I have edited the list to read correctly! Tusk – Fleetwood Mac Rumours – Fleetwood Mac Mirage - Fleetwood Mac Tango In The Night – Fleetwood Mac Tonight’s The Night – Neil Young Zuma – Neil Young The Long Run - The Eagles (Sterling) Hearts & Bones – Paul Simon It’s Hard – The Who (TML) The Stranger – Billy Joel 90125 – Yes (Masterdisk RL) The Nightfly – Donald Fagan (Masterdisk RL) Bop Till You Drop – Ry Cooder Live Fillmore East - The Allman Brothers Capricorn 2CX-0131 (U.S. '74) Beginnings - The Allman Brothers -Capricorn/Atco 2CX-0132 (U.S. '74) Some Girls - Rolling Stones (Sterling) Presence - Led Zeppelin The Song Remains the Same - Led Zeppelin JG PS: I also saw Japanese pressing of Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East, but I passed at €80!
