Great examples everyone. When this subject comes up I always think of the solos in the middle and end of Welcome To The Machine. Not the most virtuosic solo, but I love the sound, in the same way, as the sound in Lucky Man.

And yes, Allen Ravenstine of Pere Ubu should be singled out for making some of the most outrageous sounds with his EML100 on album The Modern Dance, definitely a trailblazer.

speaking of outrageous sounds, the "electric storm"-album by white noise is a perfect example for this, check out the track "the visitation"..

also some favourites by rick wright: his "shine on you crazy diamond" parts and "welcome to the machine"

The recent song "Let It Happen" by Tame Impala has some really amazing synth. The only recent song given me the goosebumps in ages btw

Manfred Mann's yer man. Peak period (for me, that's Roaring Silence - Watch - Angel Station) has loads.

Try this one, from 2.30 to 4.20. Piano first (in full stereo it's wonderful) then synth.

And basically all of this. They claim it's live, but I think it's too good not to have been doctored.

Solo by Eddie Jobson at 1:59 circa. Possibly my favorite synth solo ever.

  16. I don't remember the track's name, it's at my other house on a comp CD a friend made for me, but it is from 1974 and it is The JB's with James Brown just going off A-Tonal on the synthesizer for the whole track, it is really cool

Another vote for Eno. This one is flat-out whacked.

I know you're busy, so if you just want to hear the solo FF to 1:08 and reel in awe.

not exactly a solo, but the synth plays a lot of lead lines and has a really prominent role until the lead guitar kicks in:

I didn't see it on here anywhere, but Parliament's Flash Light. The lineup is drums, rhythm guitar, vocals, and synth.

Too lazy to see if this has already been posted, too tired.
Anyway i just came across this. I've always wish the moog solo at the end of 'Lucky Man' would go on and on, well on this version it does! It's great, some of the bass notes he hits are so, well, bassy.
I'd love to hear more of someone going a bit mental like this with a moog.

Herbie Hancock's monstrous ARP Odyssey solo on 'Chameleon' is, well, monstrously good.

Pretty much any Kevin Moore solo on Dream Theater's Images and Words, but especially "Take the Time" and "Learning to Live".
