They were an imitation of the 60s liverpool sound imo.

And the Stone Roses basically nicked the Can structure as the blueprint for their debut album...

One could argue that Phil Collins similar vocal style to Peter Gabriel helped him advance his career.
Another singer could have killed Genesis, which was most certainly the springboard for his massive solo career.

Black Is Black by Los Bravos. Lead singer Mike Kogel sounded amazingly like Gene Pitney. Good bar bet, btw.

I agree as far as Royal sounding like Pitney is concerned.

  8. I don't think ELO sounds anything like The Beatles. Influenced by them, yes but they don't sound like them to me.

Anytime someone needs to use the Top 200 to argue a bands popularity you are probably on the losing end of the argument.

  10. Imitating? No. Influenced by and worshipped the guy? Yep.

I would agree with that. If you want a Hendrix imitator then it's Frank Marino (as much as it pains me to say it as I enjoy his work).

Glenn Christense Foremost Beatles expert... on my block

Badfinger had a pretty heavy Beatles vibe, but interestingly , to me anyway , it was more apparent on their second album their first album to my ears .

In the 70's Dylan sounded just like Dylan.

I think most bands would be glad to have as much success as Starcastle or Klaatu, multi-album runs on major labels and in Klaatu's case one of their songs became a hit in a cover version.

When soon to be or hopeful rock stars go to bed at night I doubt they are dreaming of being mentioned in the same breath as Starcastle.

There is only one Stevie Winwood but he sure can summon his inner Ray Charles.

 "Number 9 Dream" and "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" were hits at around the same time, and a lot of people just assumed that one was the flipside of the other.

  21. "A lot of people"? I purchased both at the time and didn't think they were at all. I don't know anyone who did. While John Lennon was an ex-Beatle it also sound distinctly like Lennon's solo work and not his work with The Beatles (although one could argue that the strings might remind a bit of the use for "Strawberry Fields Forever" for Lennon's song) but I think, largely, Lennon's solo, work is distinct from The Beatles as well and Jeff Lynne sounds nothing like Lennon, McCartney, Harrison or Starr.

Agreed. I'm always struck by how much on the early Collins-led Genesis albums, he is clearly trying to pull a "Peter Gabriel." I wouldn't say their respective solo careers were similar by any other stretch (though they both did occasionally play/sing on each others' albums).

Their first hit, "Last Train to Clarksville," was basically a re-write of "Paperback Writer."
"No Time" was basically "I'm Down."
