I have lots of them, but I don't like them, not the way they look, the way they feel or the way they sound. I don't do MP3 downloads because they are a ripoff (so to speak). But I sense that within a few years high resolution music downloads will be a viable option for those who value sound quality. Am I onto something?

If you feel that way about them I think you've kind of answered your own question. No?

Personally, I think there's never been a better time to buy them. Tons of gems going for peanuts, provided you can be bothered sifting through all the dross in thrift shops to find them.

It's really all in the mastering more than the resolution, imo. I like Steve's Aja is better than the shm sacd, for instance. Also, I can't really tell the difference in layers on hybrid sacds especially in comparison to the difference between different masterings. That difference anyone can pick out. Difference between 88.2, 96 or 192k? Good luck. It's ok to not like physical media in general, I get it. But the quality stuff, I don't get as much between cd and downloads. Listen Steve's Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits' and try to top that on a digital medium.

  8. There are already many hi-res music stores. HD Tracks, Prostudiomasters, and Pono Music for starters. Ditch your CD's and purchase from them and you will be happy. Also, you can subscribe to Tidal streaming at 16/44.1 quality and say good riddance to your CD collection.

If you don't like them, by all means don't buy them. I can't think of anything more foolish than buying music in a format that you don't like.

Lossless audio is the way for me, and I have no regrets selling off my CDs while they were still worth something. I bought a remastered Zeppelin CD, and a remastered Zeppelin iTunes download, and I still can’t tell the difference.

I don't think it is time to stop buying CDs yet. While there are sources for purchasing CD quality music or better music on-line, CD is still the most easily available format for CD-quality sound. Plus, just like with vinyl to CD, there are many albums that are available on CD that are not available as a download.

Although I don't have a problem with downloads as long as they are priced appropriately (a lossy download should cost less than the regular CD), I still prefer to purchase the CD because: (1) I like to have the physical CD (which usually includes an informative booklet that are often not available with the downloaded version) and (2) I can rip the CD myself and choose the codec and quality rather than having to take what is offered on line.

Yup. CD is the new LP. I snatched up massive amounts of nice vinyl in the 90s and 2000s when people were practically giving it away. (I even received two "purges" which yielded some great stuff). Now I'm snatching up CDs like crazy. They still sound great, and it's nice to have the physical media.

I went on a splurge to a used CD store and two thrifts this weekend. Here's my haul from one Thrift on Saturday last weekend.

I think CDs sound great and I like the physical format itself a lot.

As far as I'm concerned there's no better time to buy CDs than RIGHT NOW.
