I found this from another manufactures web site:

Q: I noticed the warning label on your product says, “Handling the
coated electrical wires of this product exposes you to lead.” Is it
    Safe?

A: The labeling is required to comply with a new regulation
mandated by the state of California, which had taken issue with trace
levels of lead typically found in the PVC coating of the electrical
wire. This type of wiring is found on nearly everything you plug-in
including your computer and other appliances. You will start to see
this label on electrical products as well. It should be noted that it
is not the lead content in the products that has changed only the
labeling regulation, that has changed. On our Sheer Glow™ lighted
ribbon product, the labeling applies to the light cord not the ribbon
material. Although the labeling is only required in California, all of
our electrical products will include this label since it is impossible
    to control the distribution.

California law requires notification if products are hazardous,
regardless of how great the hazard is. If you don't want to know,
then don't read the labels. Almost any wire in consumer products will
    have this warning.

    Weird.

I bought a power washer for cleaning the driveway and walkway a few years ago and it had a similar warning label on it.

Keep them out of your bathtub, too. You don't want to soak in that. ;)

Yeah, that's pretty much the extent. Probably best to wash your hands after handling them.

This reminds me of threads discussing lead shot in spkr stands & the unknowing, agonizing advice about the dangers of lead. You'd thing they were eating it. I guess washing their hands overwhelmed them.

Maybe the warning label will keep my cats away.

This is disturbing...... all that lead I handled 50 years ago, melting it down and making sinkers of all sizes for fishing..... oh, wait a minute...... I've never had even trace amounts of lead in my bloodwork.......ever. (I must be immune).

I emailed Monoprice because I was curious if the lead was inside the cord or outside.

    This is their reply...

"These units would in fact be RoHs compliant meaning the product itself would not have any lead in it. We must put a warning on the cable because the cable is manufactured or handled in a location where lead is present (most factories do this). Because we sell and ship out of California we are required to put these warnings on the item. I hope this helps, and of course if you have any more questions feel free to contact us!"

Anyway, there you have it. I still find it odd about all the other rumblings I've been reading about the exterior of cords having lead, by design. Although I don't believe everything I read on the net.

California should worry more about its tattoo addiction and less about its health.
