Making Movies by a wide margin. "Skateaway" is easily my favorite DS song.

  3. Really difficult choice for a fan such as myself. But I think because their debut kicked such ass when it was released and impacted me more that it remains my favourite.

I really enjoy their debut; upon release it seemed like a warm brisk rush of fresh air that blew away all musical excesses.
When they released Making Movies, it seemed like another ambitious layer was added to the formula, with themes and stories and characters. That extra energy was exhilarating and bumped up their music a few notches.

I think that's their 4.5 star album, before the MTV cloud hovered overhead.

    PS:
Thanks for NOT including the live album Alchemy in the poll; obviously it's a different musical creature than the studio efforts.

I went through a phase years ago when Making Movies was my fave but it was short lived. In the long run the S/T debut is not only my most played Dire Straits album but my most played album full stop.

.....and I don't mind one of the tracks from Making Movies according to my site name :D

Ever since I got the SHM-SACD, it's been the debut.

I would have selected Love Over Gold if it wasn't for the hideous Industrial Disease. I voted for their debut album.

I think Industrial Disease was due to Warner Bros.' demand for a single? Twisting by the Pool would have been better......

"Love Over Gold" is the 'artistic one'. It was huge in school but I think I have played "Making Movies" most for myself. I go for that one...

What he said. The artsy side of me claims Love Over Gold, but for sheer enjoyment, it's Making Movies by a country mile.

gregorya I approve of this message

There are many high spots across all of their albums, but I find that the debut has more of a timeless quality to it... at the time of release, it seemed like it came from another planet...

I easily picked the debut s/t album. My big 3 from this album are(in order): WILD WEST END, LIONS, IN THE GALLERY

It's strange because for 30 years, I never cared much for WILD WEST END. In the last few years, I've gotten more into Mark's solo work, and then I began to really enjoy WWE(that not the wrestling foundation).

The first album; fun to play all the way. One of these debuts that sounds like a band who already found their sound. Followed quite closely by Brothers in Arms; but it has a few duds (Money For Nothing and especially the Level42esque One World).

Might have been a better single, but hard to see it fitting well on the album. "Industrial Disease" seems to fit in well enough (or maybe I'm just used to it being there). Speaking of "Twisting By The Pool", it would have been nice to see that ep included in the poll, although I doubt it would get many votes.

I voted Making Movies which has remained my favorite since I first heard it in the 80s. "Tunnel of Love" manages to have epic grandeur without being self-consciously epicly grand, no mean feat. I even like "Les Boys".
