I'm no expert and only have 10 Daptone LPs (and a ton of 45s) but they seem to be consistently good pressings, never have an issue with inner groove distortion or sibilance. Pretty impressive. Not sure if it's because of how they record and master it keeps those issues at a minimum of they just have really good pressings and quality control. Not that I have a fancy set up but I do notice that on some of my other new vinyl with my cheap stuff it's more apparent without making 25 adjustments.
Also seeing a bunch of Sharon in my news feeds for Twitter and Facebook, really want to see the new film but looks like a longer wait til DVD/Blu or Netflix. Any of you seen it yet? Scary stuff hope she stays healthy for a very long time.
A couple of items I thought should be on this thread is the British band Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers - great belty/shouty retro soul. Also that first Alabama Shakes is some pretty awesome old time rock'n'soul.
It opened this week in some cities, but will be making the rounds in smaller independent cinemas through August. It's coming to Ithaca, NY in late August, I'm planning on attending. It really looks like a great film.

Neat! Although, it was $16.08, rather than $6. (at least by the time I clicked on the link). I ordered one, anyway. I'll just give my non-signed copy to a friend. Thanks for the heads-up! I'm considering hitting the one of the premier showings of the Sharon Jones flick in L.A. next weekend. Really, really wanna see that!
Price has been all over the map today. It was $4. $4!! And with prime, that's free shipping. I bought it at $6.61 as a gift. Then $8, $16, now $21! Crazy
For those interested, NPR's Fresh Air played an interview with Sharon Jones today. Listen while it's available on their podcast site: Fresh Air »
She's been performing the latest shows while simultaneously undergoing another round of chemo. She says she's rather do shows in pain than just sit at home. What incredible courage.
Just got home from seeing The Mystery Lights here in San Diego. Wow. WOW! I had a feeling they were going to be good, but they definitely surpassed my hopes. Fantastic sound, and gobs of energy. If you get a chance to see them, take it!
Everyone, I don't care if you don't like so-called World Beat music, if you're reading this thread, you must BUY THIS!!!
The album is really good too. You gotta respect Daptone for not being afraid to do something unexpected and push the boundaries of how they're defined.
You will thank me! The LP comes with a bonus 45 too (or an MP3 download code for the two songs with the CD).
Up next is Charles Bradley on August 12 in Kingston, NY! I'm hoping The Mystery Lights will be nearby soon!
