You know, those bands that you admire but for some reason, known or unknown to you, you just can't get into but wish you could.

A couple of them that I was thinking about today are Rush and Pink Floyd. These are great band with tremendous catalogues and I have nothing bad to say about either of them in any way but never, over all these years, have I ever become a fan of either one besides maybe a song here or there (Rush's "The Trees" is a stand out for me, but not much else).

It's sad in a way because I know at least the depth of the feelings die hard fans of these bands have the way I have had that experience with other bands myself (for me bands like Dinosaur Jr, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Replacements and others).

What are some of the bands you've never quite connected with (or not at all) but that you know are great and that you have a lot of respect for? Does it bother you at least a little that they haven't broken through and touched that part of your brain that lights up big time the way it does with the bands you love?

Dylan, and I wish I had the passion for the Beatles so many here have. I am guessing I'm a bit too young and you had to be there to have that connection to those artists.

Why do you want to like a band more than you do?
Accept the truth of who they and you are. They don't resonate with you.

Based on my taste in music, I should love ALL these bands. But I've never made it past their hits for some reason.
Although, I buy most of my music on "vintage" vinyl, and it's harder to find good copies of these bands, so THAT might be why.
Then again, I have a handful of Lennon records and are never put them on.

The Grateful Dead. I wish I had liked them enough decades ago to follow them with my friend Dave in his VW bus. That would have been quite a strange and interesting trip.

It would abstractly be nice to have some bands I really dig that launched in this millenium as I would feel more connected to current music and younger people.

But as a practical matter, if an artist doesn't appeal to me I do not really put effort into training myself to enjoy them.

This is a thread topic that possibly only us forumites can relate to.

As a self proclaimed music lover that believes I can enjoy a wide range of music, and do, there are some bands with which I am familiar with their hits or most popular tunes, but haven't quite sunk my teeth into their really deep tracks with a passion.

    What am I missing?

However, the bands that I barely know the music of possess excellent musicianship, extraordinary skills, great songwriting, acclaimed catalog of songs, a vast fan base, etc. So I'm fully aware their catalog is worth further listening, beyond the hits.

I just feel like a "gateway song or two" to just really "get them":

    Rush
    Jethro Tull
    King Crimson
Radiohead (post Hail To the Thief!)
    Fairport Convention
    Eric Clapton solo stuff

I realize it's just a simple case of just diving into the deep end, immerse my ears, wallow in the musical genius, and listen, listen, listen...

The main reason I wish I liked them is because they are bands that good friends like and I enjoy sharing the experience of being a fan with other people with whom I am close. The secondary reason is that I have what I would consider a very wide range of musical interests and likes and would like to love it all. I don't know, maybe I'm a greedy s.o.b.

Also, I could definitely also look at this in the reverse- I wish more of my friends liked the music I like... but that's another story.

Zappa. I have a ton of respect for him and his artistry... I just don't like the music

  23. There are more bands that I like than I have time to listen to as much as I'd like. I don't worry about bands that I don't like, talented or not.

I'm resigned to the fact that Animal Collective are just terrible. Sung Tongs is unlistenable garbage. Not challenging music, simply awful
