    Discs. There is a total of four all solo discs. There are three that are Earl on Duke Ellington compositions. And one that is Cole Porter compositions. I think that's it. . . . The Ellington blew my mind a few decades ago and still does, a master player mining the music of a master composer, and all JAZZ, deep jazz.

    And there is a disc of Earl with Jimmy Rushing and Budd Johnson. Great swinging set.

    And here is the Ricky Ford, which is a good record.

    Thanks again. I'll also be on the lookout for this Ricky Ford disk.

    I'm honestly not a big fan of the New World Records classical releases. I don't think I've listened to any of them more than once.

    I haven't heard any to my knowledge. Classical is still a new field for me in many ways. I"ll steer clear.

    — With David Liebman (soprano & tenor sax, flute), Hiromasa Suzuki (piano), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), Al Foster (drums), James Mtume (congas);
    — From 1973, this is her only recording as a leader made between 1962 and 1980; essay by Bob Blumenthal quotes Lincoln on her memories of the session

    She didn't like the Japanese drummer hired for the session, so she asked Miles Davis, who was also in Japan, if she could borrow Al Foster for the session. He not only sent Foster, but sent Liebman and Mtume as well and also stopped at the session himself.

    There is also another Cecil Taylor title on New World called "3 Phasis."

    And there are actually quite a few interesting jazz CDs on New World Records. Beside the Earl Hines and Ricky Ford titles that Lon mentioned, I have ones by Muhal Richard Abrams, Dave Douglas, Marty Ehrlich, Robert Dick, Andy Laster, Bern Nix, Tom Varner, Chris Speed, Jerome Harrys, Joey Baron and several others.

    The public-domain Phono set contains the albums Blues-A-Plenty, Not So Dukish and Side by Side and tracks from The Smooth One, among other stuff; they can be found on the now OOP Mosaic CD-set The Complete Verve Johnny Hodges Small-Group Sessions 1956-1961, which was licensed by Verve/Universal. Blues-A-Plenty can also be found on the Verve 2CD-set The Soul of Ben Webster. The individual albums have no doubt been officially available on CD in Japan at one time or other.

    Thanks very much. A few days ago I didn't know that New World Records had anything other than mid- 20th century classical. Now I have a bunch of titles to look for.
