Psychedelic music became so mainstream it turned into a joke. In some ways, when I listen to bands like the 13th Floors, I feel like I'm listen to another version of disco music. It was so trendy, with everyone stealing the same "sound," that its immediately as recognizable as the "thump thump thump" of disco (with strings!) It went from counterculture subversive to white mini-skirted go-go dancers gyrating behind Pat Boone in Las Vegas. Syd Barrett to me wrote some of the most derivative "psychedelic" music I've heard, so I was glad when he was gone and Pink Floyd developed it's own sound, free of the cliches of "psychedelic" music. I like the psychedelic influenced stuff like Tangerine Dream better where it became more avantgarde than relying solely on a sitar, fuzz pedal and a bicycle horn (thanks, Syd). Most psychedelic is probably a 45-minute "Dark Star" jam by the Dead. You either love it or want to blow your brains out until they break into "Tennessee Jed."

OK I'll admit it, the band that tripped me up...the Silver Apples.

Thanks for the heads up. I was not aware of them. There is definitely a market for weird music now, so I gotta say Fifty-Foot Hose were ahead of the curve (in a niche market). Thanks!
And I don't get the argument for the Grateful Dead. I've bought multiple vinyl and tried to get into them before from a psych angle. But they were more of a proto-country rock jam band.

Can't really argue with the Floyd folks, or the inevitable Beatles comments, but some of the lesser bands of the era were equally compelling. The Electric Prunes didn't write their own material, but they knew how to deliver it. "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night" is one of the great psychedelic tunes of its era.

Of course, they are also a bit of a one-hit wonder. But that Stockholm '67 album is a real scorcher!

    Psychedelic. Hmmm.
There's that spacey, dreamy English style epitomised by Pink Floyd (the first two albums) and The Beatles 66-67, The Stones Satanic Majecties Request,.. love it.
However, when I want things to get really intense, far out and psychedelically fantabulous, I reach for the guitar solos of Jimi or Zappa!

I think that's great. I'm listening on Spotify now. The opening track is even better. Most of the songs remind me of early other psych music from back then, with a bit more electronics. The short electronic tracks between songs are amazing. This album is on my short list of things to buy.

Some of us (ok, me) don't think cheap spring reverbs, Reticon SAD1024 bit delays made from parts found at Radio Shack, and your first Fender guitar amp equals psychedelic. It's always been more to me. I just don't get the whole current garage rock = psychedelic thing at all. Not knocking garage rock aesthetics, just don't understand why half the world sees it like I think you (and half the world) do.

Maybe you need to listen more closely to the lyrics and the philosophy behind them instead of worrying about the cheap spring reverbs.
