I read an interview which, I think was from last year, in which Dylan said that he was "transfigured" by the motorcycle accident and that the person that came out of the accident was a different person.

He says these things in a tone which seems to be a mix of mysticism and irony.

If anyone has handled media best, it's Dylan. He's been able to keep his own personal identity to himself through not answering questions with direct responses. Anyone that has to live with their entire life being put under a microscope should get a pass about things that shouldn't matter to anyone else but themselves. It's not like he owes us anything.

Dylan is quite a character. So much speculation around his persona and life and when he makes a documentary like "No Direction Home" he doesn't reveal anything and just let people continue to speculate. No need to explain. :)

Further threadcrap: he'd go quite far in politics these days, indeed.

He's raised being an evasive enigma to the level of high art. Perhaps he learned this when he was a poor boy traveling with circus trains and hobos in the 1950s. Wait, you mean that wasn't real?

Conspiracy theories abound. Perfect for today's world.

This has been way overblown through the years.

Remember, this is Dylan. A man who actively constructed his own history from when he was young. Who was furious when his real history was uncovered in the early 60's, but that should be no reason for him to have stopped constructing his own story (as an artist, of course). From the lack of evidence, I am more inclined to believe that there was no actual accident, it was metaphorical. I believe that there was another world tour in the works (or even committed to), and he (and the Band) couldn't face the hostile reactions to his electric music. The motorcycle accident was a good way to get out of the tour, and to change what he apparently recognized as a self-destructive path. It may have saved his life.

I wonder where that bike is today. Had it been a Harley music history would be so different: it probably wouldn't have started.

Stayed holed up in a country doctor's house for nearly a month, an hour away from Woodstock?

My guess is he was crumpled up quite a bit, maybe broke his neck to a minor degree - a vertebrae like he says.

Probably not life-threatening, but knocked and scared the hell out of him.

Made the daytime turn to black.

Only he, his doctor and Sarah know with any certainty what happened. It's possible that his convalescence was a blend of recuperation from the accident and detoxing from whatever combination of chemicals he may have been running on up to that point.

    Before accident Dylan = god
    After accident Dylan = mortal

Seriously, what that guy was like in 65-66 is incomprehensible. Afterward, yeah he's his own cat but you can kinda relate to him. I connect with the singer of Tangled Up in Blue as a human being. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands? One can only gape in awe.

Site of his recuperation, according to a little Googling.
