Agreed Darryl. My comment is just that they should have ponied up an extra $5000 or so in 1964 to make AHDN in color, thats all.

Even if they had shot it in color, even if that shooting would have been only $5000 more but I think much more, to strike 3000 prints in color at the time would have been some serious money.

What I am trying to understand is...
There was about 1 year between filming of AHDN & Help.
What happened in that year that made them decide to do the next film in color.
Was there something in those 12 months that signified that The Beatles were
more than just a passing fad?
You would think that before they started filming AHDN that they knew that this was
    not a passing fad.

The big thing that impressed United Artists was how much MONEY it made.
The budget for a hard days night was around $500,000, which was decided upon before The Beatles broke in America and i'm not quite sure
on the exact sales figures for 1964, but when the film was released in the summer of 1964,
when Beatlemania was in full swing, it made quite a very huge profit for them worldwide. We are talking millions of dollars. They also were able to
acquire rights for the soundtrack album and a United Artists executive said at the time before the film was released, that
if the movie lost money, they could make it up with sales from the soundtrack album.

Why: Because I *never* said that anyone called this a Dark movie. I merely pointed out that Black and White film, when used for EFFECT and not for budgetary reasons, is almost ALWAYS used to underscore a Dark theme. But you didnt get that.

  8. Do you want Dr Strangelove or Citizen Kane in colour too ?

Disraeli Gears and F_C_FRANKLIN like this.
  9. Woody Allen's Manhattan is beautiful and not a dark theme.

Sure it is....and since color has been available since 1933, there will always be exceptions.
