      NRBQ
      Release date: November 11, 2016
    Everybody say yeah!

The first-ever career-spanning boxed set! Produced and compiled to celebrate 50 years of the New Rhythm and Blues Quartet—NRBQ!

Founded in 1966 in Shively, Kentucky, NRBQ has given their dedicated fan base 50 years of surprises and exceptional live shows. No style of music is safe around NRBQ as their repertoire consists of choice, wide-ranging covers (their first Columbia album for example, found them covering Eddie Cochran, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and Sun Ra) to their own compositions, many, also covered by other artists (Bonnie Raitt, Dave Edmunds, She And Him, Steve Earle, Los Lobos). Playing all kinds of music made them hard to peg across the years, but it made them anything but boring.

Their live shows are legendary and are made up spontaneously on the spot with no set list. They can, in a heartbeat, swing from one of their own hits (“Me And The Boys,” “RC Cola And A Moon Pie,” “Howard Johnson’s Got His Ho-Jo Workin’,” “Ridin’ In My Car”) to a perfectly curated cover, to a “magic box” request from the audience. They served as the unofficial house band for The Simpsons during Seasons 10-12 and count among their fans Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, The Replacements, Keith Richards, Wilco, and Elvis Costello among legions of others!

With more than 30 albums recorded across 50 years they, have proven themselves to be peerless as musicians, songwriters and performers. So to celebrate 50 years of NRBQ, Omnivore Recordings is proud to present High Noon: A 50-Year Retrospectiveconsisting of five CDs of hits, rarities, concert staples, covers and previously unissued gems alongside liner notes and previously unseen photos.

After 50 years of brilliant, unpredictable, joyfully exciting musical explorations, on stage and in the studio, it’s time to celebrate NRBQ!

Looks very cool. Looking through the track listing, tho', I'm getting the sense I already own quite a bit of this. This might not be a slam dunk for me.

It sure would be nice if Ida and the rest of the MIA's from the debut album got a CD release. This is great and I love the Omnivore label, but I'm not sure how much I'll be needing this set.

Not thrilled that they put a few unreleased things on a set where a fan would have to buy 100 that they already have. I'll be happy if it becomes available for digital download purchase of individual tracks, but at the moment that looks dubious because on the Omnivore site it just shows "pre-order cd" whereas other upcoming releases for ex. Big Star or Beach Boys there's also a "pre-order digital" option

This looks excellent and long overdue!! But, I don't see "It Comes To Me Naturally" on the list. Not sure how that's even possible?!

    That's a great one.

Depending on SQ, I might be down for this - I don't have that much NRBQ

With a band that's been around as long as they have, and have performed as many songs as they have, you're never going to come up with a track list that's going to please everybody. There's always going to be stuff missing. If you totally go for rarities, a "normal" person (like a handful of people I know who would be inclined to buy this) will complain that so many key tracks were left off. And then diehards complain when there's not enough previously unreleased stuff. So it's kind of a no-win.

From my perspective, it's a pretty decent overview. I've got anything and everything on this band, yet there's still some stuff on here that whets my appetite. I hope the booklet that accompanies it does the band justice!

I agree. But "Comes To Me Naturally" is a trademark Q tune. Just wanted it in remastered sound and surprised it didn't make the cut - at least a live version?

But no diehards would complain if it was all unreleased material!
An introductory compilation for newbies and an unreleased rarities set should be separate products. Reading the promotional blurb, it's meant to be an introductory compilation for newbies.

And does it make sense for a newbie to pick this up? I only know these guys by reputation. Never heard even one song.

NRBQ have an incredible songbook, so I don't blame you for lamenting "Naturally"'s absence. But is it really a "trademark" tune? I would argue that their only true trademark tunes are probably:

    It's A Wild Weekend
    If I Don't Have You
    Me And The Boys
RC Cola And A Moon Pie
    Ridin' In My Car
I Love Her, She Loves Me

And while not quite "trademark" these are fan favorites that many would include on a short list of essential Q tracks:

    Ain't It All Right
Howard Johnson's Got His Ho-Jo Working
Never Take The Place Of You
    Get Rhythm
    Wacky Tobacky
    I Want You Bad
    12 Bar Blues
    Captain Lou
    Green Lights
    You Can't Hide
    Rain At The Drive-In
    Little Floater
Want You To Feel Good Too
    I Like That Girl
    Feel You Around Me
    Don't She Look Good
    Housekeeping
    Magnet

I'm probably forgetting some. And obviously this list is subjective. I can think of at least another 20 or so songs I would identify as "essential" but it's in the ear of the beholder. Because they've been playing live for 50 years, I'm pretty sure you could break down their live performances into 5- or 10-year increments and identify stuff like "It Comes To Me Naturally" as a "trademark" tune because it may have been a mainstay for a period of time.

Anyway, I really love NRBQ and got to thinking after this thread appeared how difficult it would be to assemble a box set of this band and try to please as many people as possible. I don't blame anyone here for wanting more rarities (that is what I would love), but I also sympathize with Omnivore's desire to present a well-rounded overview of this incredible band's career.

To quote one of their song titles, "Yes, Yes, Yes"!!

They are one of the great treasures of rock & roll/pop/r&b/jazz/you-name-it! There's no other band like them!

So can we assume that Omnivore might be working on individual Q album reissues as well?
