Try rotating the optical cord at both connectors, it will only go in one way.

nah, you're cool man. This is a digital optical cable, I can see the input right on that amp and I think I see the output on the TV (digital audio out). Super close to being done.

Honestly, I've never used the phono input. I use my Lounge pre amp on line 1 and I rarely have it up that high. Usually the 9-10 o clock position is loud enough for me.

It takes a hell of a good internal phono to beat the Lounge.

Every once in a while I think about testing it out, but part of me is afraid that I'll hear no difference and I wasted 300 bucks. :)

That looks close to normal. Just a bit louder than I set mine, probably due to my external pre-amp vs your using the built in one. No big deal.

Note that the optical cable connectors are not perfectly square. Rotate them until they fit into the component/TV.

What speakers are you using? Did you get optical cable in? It can be finicky to get the orientation right.

The red one is coaxial. You want the optical next to it.

Oh man! Put your glasses on!

The TV has an optical digital out and the amp has an optical digital in - both clearly visible in the photos. The cable you have bought is exactly right to make those connections. The connections are not square in shape, they have a curved side and locating ridges. You need to correctly orientate the connector before it will click in properly. Once you hear that click at both ends you will be good to go.

Just slow down, take a breath, use your eyes, and stop blaming all your frustrations on the equipment. As said before in this thread, there is a big element of User Error going on here.

    Good luck.

Is now the wrong time to say that the TV is going to compress the audio signal and it would be better to go from the source directly to the amp?

At this point it is either working or there is a guy in NJ out in his yard with a hammer, an amp and a TV. Either way, pictures would be cool.
