I'm no Nat King Cole expert , but this may be my favorite recording of his.

It's the hat trick for me: Great vocal, great arrangement, great song.
The intro section always gives me chills .
So, if push comes to shove which is your favorite recording of his ? (single song, not album)

I've got a greatest hits CD of his but are there any obscurities you would recommend that I check out?

Yeah, for me it's "Stardust." I love the "dry" (no reverb) mix that was accidentally included as a hidden track on the DCC disc of "Love Is The Thing."

Thanks for responding. For a minute there I thought I might be the only one here who cares about Nat King Cole. :D

    Not a chance!
Too many great vocals - impossible for me to choose just one. "Laughing On The Outside" is a splendid one however.

    I was thinking of sexing up my thread title to get more traction here;
"Who's singing do you prefer ? Nat King Cole or Mike Love?" :p

Such a great vocal talent. Smooth.
I also only have a greatest hits CD of Nat. It may be cliche to like this one, but my favorite has always been "Unforgettable" which is hardly a hidden gem.
Other favorites are "The Very Thought of You" and "Looking Back".

@A. Scrounger stole my answer. :)

The original mono "Unforgettable" is still right up there, too, considering that I proposed to my wife while that was playing. I've never forgotten that.

This is like picking which one of my children I like the most...

...if I had children, that is. :)

I know it's cheating, but I really can't pick just one.

For someone who adores the Christmas holidays, I still have not "gottn over" The Christmas Song. I never grow tired of it. Even when I come across it year round, say, on the Nat King Cole Story, it makes me smile and I give it a full listen as if it were the first time. This one song sums up the happiness and warmth of Christmas tradition in our home. Sorry Bing.
If holiday songs are excluded, That Sunday, That Summer. Beautiful!

  19. "After Midnight"
Bias: recorded in my birth year [released in '56 as well/EP '57].
Hey, how else are you gonna choose between all the great 'King's' = "Pop", "Jazz", "Swing", or "Christmas" releases?!?!
    Or, even "Instrumental" over "Vocal"???

    Prefered delivery of sessions:
Nat 'King' Cole And His Trio* - After Midnight
    Steve's Analogue Productions SA-CD.
    [+ it's mono/nothing against wax]
Steve also did a SA-CD of "The Christmas Song".
Steve's DCC 'King' CD & Gold DC's are well worth checking out too!!

Super Sad [first few Google search results for 'NKC 56']:
1956 nat king cole - Google Search
    R.I.P.
