I'm assuming the Stones records in particular got played in many a discotheque. My copy is not sonic Valhalla.
    The French loved Brian Jones.

    Here's how I rank it:

    First Golden Era:
    Aftermath through Let it Bleed

    Second Golden Era:
Sticky Fingers through It's Only Rock N' Roll

    Silver Era:
    Black & Blue through Undercover

    Copper Era:
    Dirty Work - present

Gotta go with Buttons on this, tough call though (actually listening to Aftermath as I write this). Between the Buttons is really The Stones at their melodic best. The LP has an indescribable charm that I absolutely love. Both efforts are some of the best and most underrated Stones stuff

Between The Buttons is still ridiculously underrated. None of its songs are well-known: that includes Back Street Girl, probably the best Stones 'deep cut'.

    BTB screams 1966, not 1967.
TSMR screams summer of love 1967, not winter of discontent 1967.

  16. Yes, absolutely. "Looking Tired" on the other hand is definitely an Aftermath outtake in both sound and feel, recorded during the initial December '65 sessions rather than the earlier September '65 sessions where it is often erroneously placed.

Personally, of the two LPs in question I prefer Aftermath, and will accept nothing other than the U.K. configuration. Such was their embarrassment of riches from the heldover December '65 tracks combined with the March '66 tracks, that if you include all the extant singles/B-sides and unissued/Flowers tracks, they really could have issued a double LP - which would have preceded Blonde On Blonde. And the key thing with this LP is that while it shows the group branching out in full artistic bloom, it also keeps them very much in touch with their blues/R&B roots.

Well, it was entirely recorded in 1966 and came out very early in the year!

Of course, so was "Strawberry Fields" and no one says that song "screams 1966"! :D

April 1966 would make it a spring release.

Huh? "Between the Buttons" came out in January 1967 UK and February 1967 US...

But you said it came out early in that year "1966"?

No, I meant it came out in 1967. Given that you mentioned it was a 1967 album that "screamed 1966", I didn't think I needed to specify the actual release date - I thought that was understood...

still sounds like a 1966 record, not 1967. No biggie. Sounds dated ( in a good way) for 1967.

And my point is that it was recorded in 1966, so it probably should "sound 1966"! :)

Yes ! And they should have put it out in 1966, even the rubber soul esqe cover screams 1965/66. :)
