If I ever get the funds to restore mine I'm leaning towards the SME M2 12, but I can see the appeal of a vintage arm, at least looks wise.

I went with the Thomas Schick 12-inch tonearm

I am still waiting for delivery, so I can't offer comments on sound. But I did my research. Art Dudley has written a couple of articles on it for Stereophile.

I hope you don't have to dress up in Victorian gear just to play a record.:p

Doesn't everyone? I'm very formal when I spin records.

I have a lowly Rega RB-300 on my Garrard 401. It's a shockingly good combo.

This conversation is meaningless without knowing the cartridge to be used.

I assumed he was going to choose a cartridge to go with the arm, so sorting out the deck, then the plinth and arm and then the cart, although having some idea about the intended cartridge would obviously help.

If I decide to save money and cut costs on mine a Rega is plan B as I have a few to hand, they are a great value for money choice.

Up until now I have lived with a Rega P3 (with RB300 arm). When I decided I was moving on, I made up my mind to break completely from the Rega approach to analog.

I'm not sure what they cost in the States, but a used RB 300 can be had for around £100 here, I'm not sure there's any better value in used arms, yes there are plenty that better it, but starting at three times the cost so one can forgive the flaws in the Rega arm.

Agreed. For what it does, it does it well.
