BB King (or B.B. King!) - For Collectors

I hope there are some BB King collectors out there, whether experts, completists, discographers, or just casual and new fans, who can help sort out my initial question. The so-called "Bihari Brothers" labels (Modern, RPM, Kent and Crown) had a huge number of vintage BB King sessions in the pre 1963 period. Superb BB King!

Ace Records (UK) has done an excellent series of BB King material from this time in quality transfers, as they own the actual masters.

My initial question is: Has Ace actually reissued on CD EVERYTHING that was originally issued by the Bihari group of labels on singles and LPs? I realize there still be many unissued alternate takes from this time in Ace's possession, as he seems to have done as many as 5 takes for many songs. But are there Bihari records missing from Ace's CDs? (It would help me rest in my search.

Beyond that, I invite comments on the discography of the ABC/Bluesway period that came after 1963 - ideal CD reissues, missing records on CD, etc.

He was a tremendous singer, and everyone knows about his distinctive guitar.

 

If you're okay with Japanese text, P-Vine has a mammoth 17-CD box of his RPM and Kent recordings.

I've been a BB. King fan since I first heard him on the radio in 1960. I've always loved his Modern label recordings the most and thanks to the Ace reissues, have been able to collect most of his output. Unless you need to have everything, the Kent/Crown reissues with bonus tracks are just fine - plus odds and ends like the recently released rarities CD on Ace. I recently heard a vinly rarities LP that is part of the P-Vine 17 CD set and IMO thy're scrapping the bottom of the barrel finding new songs to release.

On the other hand, if I was just starting my B.B. King collection and had the spare cash, the P-Vine set would be tempting. Hope this helps.

 

If anyone is aware of what tracks (either a general or detailed description) are on the 17CD box which are NOT on the currently in-print series of single, double CDs or the 4CD box on the Ace label, that would be nice to know.

 

WOWZERS!

 

I finally bought the Japanese P-Vine 17CD/1 LP Box (December 2015). It is limited to 400 copies world-wide. I'll make a wild guess, and estimate there are about 100 copies or less still available.

I'll give this tip to anyone considering buying this incredible box. First, on Amazon USA, the only dealer is P-Vine in Japan, the manufacturer, at $390 plus $4 shipping (from Japan) to USA. Nearly all other worldwide dealers charge around $500 or more.

BUT, Ace Records in the UK is selling it for 230 British Pounds, plus a very nominal shipping charge to USA. Ace states that the item would be shipped directly from P-Vine in Japan, though the purchase was from Ace. That was a savings over the Amazon USA/P-Vine price, so I did it. After I made the transaction, I noticed that 46 pounds was VAT tax, so I wrote to Ace customer service, and they posted a credit for the 46 British Pounds to my credit card. I just checked, and all was in order. The total price after VAT refund, was about $275 (at the conversion rate of the transaction date).

Though this is still a high price, it is a considerable bargain compared to all other worldwide sources. More than 25% off. Ace can probably do this discount, as they own all of the rights to the recordings.

The 12X12 book in the set is part in Japanese, and part English, but the Japanese portions do not appear to be translated (too bad). The hardcover is a Japanese translation of a book otherwise available (used) in English (you may want to buy that). The CDs are in small mini-LP covers (not "proper Japan style", but Euro style, but they add cloth inner sleeves (nice!). If you love the look of OBI strips, the set has one, and it comes in a protective polybag.

The best thing, I received the set 4 days after ordering it. It is playing now.

No buyers remorse. This is great. But I hope some others can get the deal. If you are in a country where no VAT should be charged, you may have to write to Ace Customer service after the purchase. They responded quickly to my polite inquiry and offered the refund. Even with VAT, Ace has the best price.

This is one set that will become a rarity. They meant it - 400 copies.

I was one of millions whose first blues love was B.B. King, so many many years ago. After getting a small pile of his records, I moved on first to John Lee Hooker, then Lightnin' Hopkins, then Otis Spann, and then a whole range of acoustic and electric blues masters - while at the same time pursuing an obsession with jazz and continuing my interest in folk, early country and world music. I let my interest in BB King slip away, though I still respected him. I would say my favorite blues artist was Howlin' Wolf. But these days, I am amazed at BB King's singing (especially) and playing. He is beyond category. This early music is not only "blues", but he proves himself as one of the greatest "R&B" singers, "soul" singers, and spiritual singers, all the while with his incredible musical guitar. A premier giant!

 

I've tried to get an overview over the Bihari recordings, but it's virtually impossible. With all the remakes, remixes and alternate takes (not to mention different titles for the same songs!) out there, I just feel overwhelmed even if I have quite a few of the recordings already...

However, if you have the eleven Ace CD remasters, the Modern Recordings 2 CD set, the Vintage Years box and the two best-ofs (RPM & Kent singles) you should have pretty much every song released by the Bihari brothers. Exceptions:

You sound like a discography expert for BB. I was very pleased with the P-Vine Box, even though I had most of the Ace CDs (I was getting obsessive). Now I have also gone and bought the complete run of 29 Japanese "ABC/MCA/Geffen" label CDs, currently a budget-priced limited edition. The add the 10CD "Ladies & Gentlemen" Box. I am missing the small handful of MCA/Geffen discs that were not included in the Japanese set of 29 (why didn't they just do them all?)
The Japanese CDs often added some bonus tracks not on the USA CDs.

Now I do not know which post-Kent/Modern era (mostly ABC/Bluesway) SINGLES are not on these issues? Is it your shortlist above? Or are there more? Do you have a web tip to a more definitive BB King discography?

 

Thanks, most of my info actually comes from Charles Sawyer's biography. I tried to find out how to complete my (rather random until now) collection and ended up with a HUGE word file...I really don't feel like buying CDs for single songs...

Few errors there, but overall quite comprehensive, IMO.

 

The people who own ABC can make some money if they put out a box called "BB King - The Complete ABC/MCA Singles" preferably in mono. Like the Ray Charles box. BB is big, and should sell.

 

@Tribute Can you confirm that "Endless Night" and "What Have I Done" (from Blues in My Heart remaster, supposedly unreleased before) are indeed the same song? I think somebody heard the words "It seems like the end is nigh" and decided to call the song "Endless Night"!!

 

Maybe I can try. But I also wonder if anyone knows whether this recent Ace release is already included on the P-Vine "super box set" (I should be able to, but my mind has been on vacation).

I worked on the comparison. Most, if not all of the above CD is on the 17CD Japanese box set

The P-Vine box and this Ace comp were released about 3 weeks apart, the Ace CD in late November and the box in mid-December last year. It's likely they were developed at roughly the same time, but maybe P-Vine chose not to include them for some reason. It does undermine the word Complete in their set title.

 

I was not absolutely thorough in my comparison, but I did note some discrepancies (don't remember of they were these) but they were confusing, like maybe one said tk2 and another said alt, or that kind of thing. I still hope for someone to give a definitive answer as well, whether based on discography details/matrix #'s or through A/B listening. Any other input is welcome. After buying the PVine box, I'd be willing to buy the ACE, but not if it is 97%-100% duplicated

 

I'll have another look at the discog if you can in turns tell me whether "What Have I Done" (from Blues In My Heart remaster, I don't see it on the box set) and "Endless Night" (from the P-Vine set) are the same song!

 

Well, I guess that spares me the trouble. I don't find those three either but maybe they're just mislabeled. The box set isn't really complete anyway (at least some overdubbed versions are clearly missing).

 

I can accept deleting overdubs, but still wonder if Take numbers can be mislabeled. Maybe the producers at ACE can resolve this. If they can definitively state that certain tracks were not on the P-Vine box, it will boost sales at least a little. Not sure if I can help on JulesRules question at least now
