First one I thought of... But I like the song in spite of its attempted critique. A peaceful neighborhood containing rock groups, charcoal burning, lawn-mowing squires and proud rose gardeners--maybe it's my current age, but it doesn't seem that horrible to me.

IMO, it works better as an evocation of simple Sunday pleasures than as a protest against "status symbol land".

Not necessarily mocking the 9-5 life of suburbia, but a lot of songs by Fountains of Wayne are "slices of life" of the type of people who live that life. Songs like "'92 Subaru," or "Hackensack" (the latter about someone dreaming about the hometown girl who went on to become famous).
