I really need to stop just continually listening to various performances of a narrow section of Mozart's work e.g. piano concertos, symphonies and operas.

A box set, such as this, might be a good way to broaden my listening base.

    It's a bargain!

Dylan's Cutting Edge 18-CD set cost more than this .... $599.00!

Good point and a relevant comparison.

The rest of the classical composers should also have box sets like this as well.

  8. I like Mozart a lot but mostly as a casual fan. This set intimidates even me, and I often listen to music 6 to 8 hours per day.

I was going though a bunch of old CD store catalogs. I don't remember how many CDs the Philips complete Mozart set had, but the price was somewhere in the vicinity of $1200. I saw it at Tower as well. I was impressed by the size of the box. I'll be looking at my CD catalogs for the fall. I'm sure one of them will feature this new set (and I bet some of the material from the Philips set is in this new set since Decca now distributes the old Philips material). Hope you enjoy it! :edthumbs:

I understand this set has the rare outtake "Susanna, It Aint Me Babe" from The Marriage Of Figaro.

Its a little known fact that another great composer recorded Mozart. Though its not completely certain who it was. There is a clue: Listen real close to the deep cuts. Somewhere in there you can hear "Is it rolling, Ludwig...?"

It isnt that much money ... it's about $2.25 per CD.

That makes the rest of the packaging free :) That means 2 harcover books, some frameable reproduction prints of Mozart letters, a score and live links to lyrics for librettos and scores for each work.

    This is a bombshell release.

Mozart and Dylan may be comparable.
Mozart is said to have heard Allegri's Miserere one time and then wrote it all out from memory.
They say that Dylan could hear a folk song once and reproduce it entirely.

I sold two over nine years, shipped in two cases. Jewel cases, fatboys, etc. Both times we gave the customer sealed boxes as they were hipped to the store. About $1000 after discounts. As I remember,my Polygram sales rep said hey sold about one a day during the '90s.

I used to own all of those Philips box sets, then sold them all when I needed money for college.

This is a great chance to recoup.

What about performances? Are the performances desirable?

  19. No disrespect to Dylan but you really can't compare him to Mozart on any level!

I was happy with the 6CD Bootleg Series 12 as I thought the 18CD set was blatant rip-off, not that I would have ever listened to it all the way through anyway. I'm in for the Mozart set though and it's now pre-ordered. I just hope I live long enough to play it through once at the very least! Compared to any other box set this one is an absolute bargain and an important cultural landmark.

  21. Price just sky-rocketed. From £300 to £500 now in some places (£400 on Amazon UK)!

They're also releasing a 33 DVD set of Mozart's complete operas.

I have an earlier mega-set of Mozart, so I'll probably pass on this one. Unless the performances are utterly phenomenal, I don't need more versions of the vast majority of everything Mozart wrote. I've got multiple versions of all my favorite works already (mostly the operas). Guess I should wait and listen to some sound samples before I rule it out entirely, but it seems hard to justify another mega-set like this.
