with always a little extra, the Japanese versions of CDs, blu Rays etc are always tempting.

I have used cdjapan before, as well as the hmv Japanese version.

    Any other recommendations / experiences?

Amazon.co.jp is a good place to check. For many items they'll ship internationally (Amazon Global) and you won't have to pay tax.

I'm a big fan of HMV Japan. Decent prices, English language website and fast shipping. But if only Disk Union shipped to the US!

Do they do a good job in packing to avoid damage in shipping?

Yes definitely. Everything I've ordered from them has come packaged in small individual bubble-wrap pouches tucked into a larger EMS bubble-wrap mailer. Plus, because they always use an expedited service to the US, the package spends less time in the mail system and has fewer opportunities to get damaged or squashed.

I go with Amazon Japan or CDJapan, whichever is cheaper. Both are great. Amazon Japan gets items to me in 2 days, which is unbelievably fast.

I use CDJapan from the UK, the prices are pretty keen and the delivery swift with great packing, there's a million postal options though, I usually go for a cheaper one, it means no tracking but I haven't lost anything yet.
