Marc Baron - Un salon au fond d'un lac

It satisfies all of the musical criteria for "best," and is therefore the best album, objectively, of the year.

Right now it's a dead heat:

    Marillion - F.E.A.R.
    Bowie - Blackstar

Still got the fourth quarter of 2016 to go, but for me, it's The Monkees GOOD TIMES!

My ranking system is easy, of the new albums I've bought I pick the releases I listen to the most.

    Margo Price- Midwest Farmers Daughter

    Elizebeth Cook- Exodus Of Venus

    Iggy Pop- Post Pop Depression

Honorable mentions: Loretta Lynn, Dinosaur Jr

Something I'm not feeling at all: Sturgill Simpson.... too grandiose

Something I've stayed away from entirely:

I've listened to samples and videos. I don't buy the nostalgic hype.

Interesting, yours seems to be the first mention of Elizabeth Cook around here, and I've only listened to the title track so far but she's pretty hot ...

There was some hubbub around here when her album dropped. I know there's a thread about it and maybe a mention or two in here. It's a really good album.

I'd like to think that this is how most people determine what their favorite albums are.

So many good albums of 2016.

    Favorite:
The Monkees Good Times - what an amazing surprise this album turned out to be!

    Honorable Mentions:
Relient K, Air for Free - a mature, Beatlesque effort. Several songs veer into McCartney territory that sound more like song suites. Check out "Local Construction."

Regina Spektor, Remember Us To Life - loving it so far.

Needtobreathe, Hard Love - They just keep getting better. Money and Fame rocks NEEDTOBREATHE - “MONEY & FAME ” [Official Audio] »

    M. Ward, More Rain - a more upbeat, percussion heavy effort than anything else he's ever released. Great stuff.

Emitt Rhodes, Rainbow Ends - Can't believe he put out such a good album after so many years. Heartbreaking and wonderful.

Crowder, American Prodigal - It's hillbilly and modern at the same time. Here's a taste Crowder - Prove It (Audio) ft. KB »

I'd like to think that too. Sometimes it seems some people pick because of some interpretation of a release challenging the status quo of everything else, artistically .... that may be just my perception, though. My picks aren't groundbreaking but I do really like them.

I think this is a great debut and is probably my favourite album of 2016 so far:

I've had a few albums that I discovered in year end lists that end up being my favorite albums of the year. If it's good enough, one listen is enough. Dawn of Midi's Disnomia from a few years ago is a good example. I bought it after Christmas and it's still my favorite from 2013. It does take a special album though.

I realize you're just talking from your own perspective, but the Best New Album of 2016 thread you are posting that comment in has over 1000 replies now, and most of them talk about a highly diverse and engaging collection of new music, seemingly not a weak year at all. Just thought it worth a mention :)
