Always reminds me of one of my favorite Derek Taylor quotes:

"When Joan and I met Donovan and Linda again in the 1970s, we were neighbors in Surrey/Berkshire, had children the same age, liked to hang out a bit. Looking through crystal spectacles you could see we had our fun; sometimes we did seem to be living inside those strange lyrics ... "First there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is ... " Know what I mean? No?"

  10. Smokey nailed the concept in Tears of a Clown:

Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But don't let my show convince you
That I've been happy since you
'Cause I had to go (why did you go), oh I need you so (I need you so)
Look I'm hurt and I want you to know (want you to know)
For others I put on a show (it's just a show)

Good choice - this one crossed my mind when I put up the initial 3 or 4.

    I am a card-carrying "Victim"-head, by the way. :)

I've posted this random thought elsewhere in discussing this song, but ...

In a probably forgotten 1980 movie called "Serial", one of the characters provides a quote (fictionally) attributed to Mr. Spock (and presented here from a 36-year-old memory):
"In an insane society, the sane man will appear insane".

I've always wondered if Graham saw the movie and that line was rolling around the back of his mind when he wrote "Victim".

Definitely appropriate for the thread, but when I tried to dance to it I almost got a hernia. ;-)

I'm not sure that this quite qualifies as yin yang, but this thread brought it to mind. The interaction between being happy to have work ... and dealing with the consequences attached.

I think its a great song and also one of their scarier jams, Jerry gets a great 'heavy metal' tone there in the late 80s/early 90s.

Whenever I see @Gary 's avatar, I think of that song.

Not to derail the thread, but my favorite moment of 1995 (yeah, I know, a tough year) was Victim>Jam>Foolish Heart at The Palace on 6/27. The jam is mostly driven by Jerry getting lost in what probably was planned as a much shorter transition ... and the audience is the beneficiary as they go off the road map much further than they were wont to do in 1995. Sort of the opposite of patience running out.
