    So many posts in this thread are of Les Pauls which are not Customs. Isn't the OP's original question about Customs...? There's a pretty big difference to those familiar with the guitars. Maybe just stick to Customs...

    does the diamond headstock inlay alone signify custom? I know that for the 60s black + split diamond does but what about later?

    I suppose it's the easiest was of telling that a Les Paul is a Custom at a glance. As far as signifying that the guitar is a Custom, I guess you could say so, but it's no more a signifier than the block inlays and ebony (or ebony-substitute) fretboard or the control knobs. It's also on the early Les Paul SG Customs and the later (but virtually the same) SG Customs. It's on ES-355s and various other Gibsons. As far as Les Pauls go, though, I believe it's on all Customs, old and new (but am happy to be proved wrong).
