Never heard anyone call the Moodies a "singles band", but to each his own. To me their albums are works, and I love to listen all the way through. My favorite is and always will be "On the Threshold of a Dream", but Seventh Sojourn is right up there behind it.

Fantastic album. Love Every Good Boy, also.

For sure 7thS has the worst cover of them all. Thank goodness the music saves the cover.

First thought, first impression is the cover is ordinary.
But afterward and with reflection it perfectly portrays the theme of the music within; a sense of desperation, fraught with uncertainty of that time period.
No wonder the gatefold interior portrayed a glimmer of hope. A leaf sprouts from the dead wood.
Also a neat touch is that one piece of the driftwood resembles a prone face, or skull.
All in all a very appropriate cover for the music within.

My introduction to the music of the Moody Blues were "Days of Future Passed" and "This is The Moody Blues".

I got this for Christmas around 1972 or 73 from my mother. I have no idea why since I only had interest in the Beatles at that point. I never heard of the MB and I doubt she knew anything about them other than the recent Nights In White Satin hit. I gave it a listen and liked it enough to play it a few times all the way through. Oddly, I decided to play it for the first time in 40 years when I was working on my basement last year and all of the songs brought back a flood of memories, mostly sad since my mom had passed away 10 years ago. But the songs sounded great after all of those years. It was a lifetime ago and is so distant to the crap music that is out there today.

They are all equally good but if I will be forced to rank them, that's my Moody Blues album ranking in terms of my personal preference.

To my ears, Island sounds as if it morphed into Doin' Time on Justin's 1977's Songwriter. Otherwise it might well have ended up on Octave in some form...

I practically turn this list upside down for my rankings!
    Almost.
TOCCC would be at No.1, followed closely by the preceding two Lps they released.
Sojourn keeps climbing up the list.

Love Seventh Sojourn! My top three are Days, TOCCC and Sojourn. Depends on my mood.
One of my best friends who also collects records always pronounces it with a soft "j" and I have no idea why. We talk about the album and I say "so-jurn" and he says back to me "syurn".
Anyway, it's just a nice, well-rounded album with great contributions from everyone. Wouldn't change a note.

Can you explain? I don't see any resemblance between the two.

  17. NumberEight

NumberEight Came too late and stayed too long

I hear the main melody of Doin' Time ("You tell me that your sun comes up every morning") as a bluesier version of the main melody of Island ("Are you hearing the lonely laughter as the lights go out on you"). To the extent that, on hearing Doin' Time again for the first time in many years, I was scratching my head to come up with what it reminded me of.

    But maybe it's just me...

had the quad 8 track of this for years but found it muddy and uninvolving, just got the DTS disc and my, it really is good isn't it? Nice mastering and very crankable, and a nice surround mix to boot. I like the songwriting here very much.

My experience exactly! The DTS Multichannel mix really opens up the songs and allows them to breathe. I found it quite revelatory - especially "I'm Just A Singer".

Superb it is indeed! Seventh Sojourn is without doubt my favourite MB album; it's personal highlight after highlight, with top notch contributions from each of the writers.

Hidden away all that time to reach us many years later. An island indeed.

Anybody know why "Lost Chord" was the only album not mixed to 5.1
    for the box set?

They lost the multitracks for that album. It was never mixed to quad because of it.
