"This is a tough movie, and it gave audiences an excuse not to go see it,"

    I don't need no excuse.

This was a hard sell for the studio even before the backstory came out.

They could change the title to "Birther of a Nation" a pick up a quick extra $5M.

The reviews upon release were considerably less excited than the Sundance response suggested they would be... but then I wondered whether nobody wanted to give it a good review lest they be perceived to be supporting a rapist.

I rarely go to theaters any more, but am very interested in seeing it. I don't remember if they even taught it to us in history class in the 70s. I only know what I saw in the very good 60 Minutes piece a few weeks ago. It's certainly something that Americans should know about.

Not surprised. Nate Turner's Rebellion would have probably fared better.

The film is good, if a bit overblown in sections. The art deserved a better fate. I'll leave any discussion of the artist to others.

    Shalom, y'all!

You do realize this is just a fictional story don't you?

This film was doomed from the start. That title, despite its historical significance, is a well known piece of racist garbage that boosts the KKK and was responsible for the rise of the klan in the early 20th century. Its a lipstick on a pig situation.
Any other title might have helped.

No, it's a historical fiction movie about an actual historical event.

He purposefully gave it that title as a counterpoint to Griffith's racist film. Another title would have helped what? The financial success of the film?

I found it to be a moving and thought-provoking, if occasionally overwrought, film. It's one of the small handful of American films that I've gone out of my way to see in 2016.
