Great resource. I have bought/sold for a while (2011) now on Discogs and the most frustrating thing is the rampant over-grading of vinyl!
Sellers think it's ok just "send it back for a full refund". Not when it's going to cost me $18+ to make up for your carelessness,Negative feedback speaks volumes.

That's what I really like about ebay. If you ask for it, ebay will tell the seller they have to pay for return shipping for item not as described issues.

  3. I always ask for pics and if they've play graded it, if I don't get a response I don't buy, most do reply. Checking out their feedback is also important. I've bought records from NZ, Switzerland, Greece, UK, Ireland, Belgium, France, Holland and of course here and the only time I've had inaccurately graded records (twice) they were from US sellers.

I too don't buy from Russia or the Ukraine and now that I think about it I don't really know why, if they have good feedback and supply pics etc there's really no reason not to, I think it's something I need to reassess.

Overall Discogs has been a positive experience for me.

I like discogs and reference them often. I realize it's not always exact...but generally exact enough for my needs. I've asked questions of sellers and always got a response and even influenced a few to post close up pictures of their actual item. And of course, that's great for future "investigators" too after I've bought the item on confirmation of info.

I like to search here and look at photos many sellers include with their sales to get an even more absolute confirmation of exact pressings etc...

    Finally...a nice Discogs™ experience!

    I was due!

Recently I've been a mono soul, instrumental, and psychedelic LP bender from 1967--the year of my birth. Though "classic rock" in general sort of depresses me, I have been on the lookout for a reasonably-priced mono copy of Disraeli Gears; anything that's surfaced on the popular auction site recently has either been a complete frisbee, or north of $100. I located a purported VG copy at a good price on Discogs where the seller advised that it had decent shine and was close to VG+ so I figured I would roll the dice on it.

Arrived today, and WOW! It's closer to M- than it is to VG, and it sounds fantastic on my mono tube receiver system.

    I love Discogs!

Cool. I love when I get records that are conservatively graded.

That's a seller that you need to add to your friends list.

My first Discogs transaction went like this:

I confirmed a seller had the CD. I paid for it. It hadn't arrived 6 weeks later (from the US). Seller responds "it should be there by now". Then he stops responding. I leave a negative and get my money back through Paypal. He leaves a retaliatory negative.

I have a negative because I never received the CD. What a site o_O:rolleyes:

Joseph, you can get retaliatory feedback removed by Discogs. Just send them the request.

OK, so....why do people bother listing items on Discogs if they have no intentions of selling?
I've sent 2 messages to a seller inquiring about an album. It's been 4 days and I never received a single response. The seller has most certainly been logged in, I can see the history on their profile page.

That is ridiculous. At least they could send you quick explanation if they are not where the item is currently.

Absolutely. I just had one removed today in fact. What they are looking for is factual reporting....without the personal stuff.

Record was NM but showed up with numerous scratches and scuffs that caused a lot of noise during playback. I would have graded it VG. I asked for a refund and he refused, he also said the pictures I sent him showing the issue were somehow faked.
    I am pursuing through PayPal.

Then he leaves me a negative feedback saying that I am an obnoxious buyer who only wants to ruin his perfect feedback with lies. Etc etc etc .

Not only did I win with PayPal...but Discogs removed his feedback. Ultimately, he issued the refund, and didn't even ask for the record back (he's in the U.K.). I'm going to send it back to him anyway.

I've never really seen that one. I guess if you had a really bad feedback score or something they might choose not to respond. Or if they don't want to ship where you live?

biggest trouble with discogs is sellers opinion of "mint" seems to differ vastly from my own

i had similar a while ago, id actually bought the item and not heard anything from the seller after a few days. Spent a few more days messaging them to see whats going on and eventually got a reply that the apparently "mint, never been played" record i had bought was lent to his mate months previously which he forgot about and didnt know where it was anymore.

Hmmmm, maybe he doesn't want to ship it to USA. They're in Belgium.
But the least they could do is reply, right?

I think Discogs is a great lexicon. Lots of information. You can see the different prices and judge them by yourself

Discogs is a great database resource and good to add/catalogue my collection, I contribute a lot to the database with matrix info etc.

But the BIG problem of ARE THE SELLERS:

    1. there's a lot sellers OVERGRADE records (sellers don't need add photos so that helps to overgrade, I never buy anything without request pictures)
    2. a lot sellers listing wrong (I always ask before buy anything, some sellers respond by example "sorry this is a modern reissue not a 1st press")
    3. some sellers grade like UNPLAYED!!! (after ask they say "well I don't know it was played or not, but looks shiny", come on! very dishonest) they don't know the origin of the record.
    4. a lot sellers ship records in crappy packings, so records arrive damaged.
    5. I even know an italian seller that have listed expensive records but he don't have it!, when I ask they say "well maybe! I have the record, please first try to buy, MAYBE you get it" crazy guy.

Overall the buying experience is not great but I had some luck too.

There is enough good and correct information on there to make it worthwhile to me though some of the inaccuracies are frustrating and too many to offfer correction edits on each.

I'd say 1, 2, 3 and 4 could easily describe other online sellers on ebay, especially 1 and 4. I've seen errors in listing on ebay and although pictures definitely help they don't really tell the whole story. For example if the picture of the cover shows a VG cover but the listing has it as NM, you need to be careful IMO. But a picture won't really tell you if an lp is as graded except in some cases where you can clearly see the lp is a lot worse than graded.

I've lost count of the useless packaging ebay sellers use, especially UK sellers who use those flimsy style record mailers for expense records. Quite a few have been ruined.

On the other hand 2 happens a lot more often on discogs and like you I always ask them to verify the version they have. I've had many sellers tell me it was listed incorrectly and they subsequently changed it. It is essential that buyers verify IMO.

Number 5 is nuts. Why bother? Complete waste of time.

I'd say my discogs experience is no worse or better than my ebay experience although I do tend to buy more on ebay so maybe if I start buying just as much on Discogs my opinion may change.

I do worse on discogs than anywhere else and have ceased buying on it. Overgrading (by a full grade or more) is rampant, about 40% of the time from 100% rated who talk good game. The site aids crony sellers by removing feedback to keep the cash flowing in. At least eBay has a system now that financially punishes bad sellers even if they also protect their rating similar to discogs. Their system has taken out the trash and it seems they all went you-know-where.

Received some minutes ago from a discogs seller (I ask about the condition of a single)

"Thanks for pointing out my mistake and on looking at the single again I have revised my gradings again".

you see! that just one example... the thing is: a lot sellers grade like NM/NM or even M but are not true, some sellers even don't know about the real condition or in extreme cases DON'T have the item, last week I buy a CD without ask anything, some minutes later the seller cancel the order, they say to me "I can't find the CD, is lost".

For that reason I NEVER buy on discogs without request pictures or ask if its listing correct etc.
(Yes request pictures maybe NOT help with the disc condition, I need trust in the grade of the seller for the the disc, but pictures helps to the check the condition of the Artwork/Inserts etc).

my conclusion is: DISCOGS = HIT AND MISS

Nothing but positive experiences for me as a buyer (5 in total so, yea, not exactly a huge data point). I do love the fact I can catalogue my collection. First thing I do when I get a new cd , LP, music BRD (or DVD) is go to Discogs to add it to my database.

I've only ever had one negative experience and it came from a seller who listed an item incorrectly - in their defense however, the barcode was identical and it was only the catalog number that was off (a new seller for what it's worth - it was a CD I had been after for a while and that was the first copy I'd seen). They issued a refund without complaint and told me to keep the CD.

However, I do have one neutral feedback and I can't for the life of my understand what it means. I bought a CD from a seller, near mint. When I got it, it looked like it had never been touched. I went to flip through the booklet, but the pages were stuck together; it was thick, glossy photo paper and some of the ink was beginning to run. It didn't look or feel damaged at all, I just assumed that the pages had too much ink and they got stuck together. I mentioned this in my feedback, which was positive - basically I said that it wasn't the seller's fault, but it would have been nice if it had been mentioned (and it was such a good deal I probably would have bought it anyway). I later found out that the seller had left neutral feedback with the description "Punisher". I have no clue what that means and why it was left.
