Mary Chapin Carpenter's Come Darkness Come Light is a year round affair mostly secular about...life, and Christmas for those who want to go that direction or NOT...wondrous.

Chapin's return to her folk/rock roots in the last decade, and her move away from her temporary (but excellent) country hits foray is a welcome breathe of fresh air! A wonderful talent forever, and always.

And don't forget Dan Fogelberg's First Christmas Morning

I just recently (October 2016) ordered the Beach Boys' Ultimate Christmas (the original Christmas Album plus 14 cool bonus tracks including highlights from their unreleased (rejected by Warner/Reprise) late '70s Christmas album). I've already played it twice and will be giving it several more spins in November and December. Very nice CD.

Yes it is too early. I saw an Xmas ad on TV yesterday and wanted to do this.

Today I ordered Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. I would have wanted LPs of every one, but the last two were less expensive on CD.

Dec. 24 is about the right time for Christmas music to start. And it can end around 2 pm on the 25th.

It's not the music's fault - it's everything that is associated with it (i.e. crass commercialism). I saw a Christmas commercial for Rent-A-Center last week and knew that it's only a matter of time before I start seeing affluent bozos giving each other Lexus automobiles with giant red ribbons on them during every commercial break. I hate those people.

Yuck! Ditto! Luckily I don't watch network TV--only online links, so we are spared any Christmas commercials!

  16. It's always too early for it and it's always too late for it too.

We start Thanksgiving day. I look forward to it every year.

That's the first day "allowed" at my house too. I always start with George Winston's December, which of course starts with the track--"Thanksgiving".
Mellow sounds to help the feast digest...

But of course earlier in the day it's Alice's Restaurant vinyl, before the feast.

I finally caved and bought The Beach Boys Christmas Album, which was the only studio album from the band I didn't own. The disc arrived today, was just expecting a plain CD in a jewel case, but received a mini LP style jacket. The CD is also a dark red, with "grooves" and a Capitol label on the face of the disc. Also has the replica sleeve that the original album had and a OBI strip as well. Just a very cool disc, and a nice surprise.

The CD has fantastic sound, and I really enjoyed listening to it. I'm not the biggest Christmas music fan, but the songs have the same great production as songs from the Today! album, and the Boys vocals are fantastic, and really great songs. Also the album is just under 30 minutes, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. Really glad I picked this up, 11 dollars on Amazon. Was very surprised to get the mini LP version, but I'll take it! :)

As a general rule, I'd say that whenever there's no more than one year until next Christmas, it's perfectly alright to indulge in some Christmas music.

Wait…you owned Summer In Paradise before the Christmas album?

Did you get the one with the green cover? There was a reissue with a different cover and one track removed. Don't ask me why. I just wish they'd put together a proper version of that 70s Christmas LP.

I have a Christmas compilation that I've had for the last ten years or so, which is a mix of radio favourites (these are significantly different in the U.K. to those in the U.S.) and personal choices. I usually break it out about a month before Christmas, since we also don't have Thanksgiving as a natural point of when to 'start' Christmas.

This year I'm going for three weeks before, just to avoid overkill.

I find Xmas an annoyance, which ruins business for a fortnight. I hate to be not working, as I prefer being in the office. Xmas means other people are out until almost the second week in January, and everything is back-burnered until people flush it from their minds.

I don't like Xmas music, although I don't mind gift-giving towards my family, and I do make the effort. If, however, you're a single bloke, Xmas only serves to rub its annoying tweeness into your face. It's for families and couples, and children.
