fmfxray373 Capitol LPs in the 70s were pretty good.

"Be The Rain" is a great song.

David Briggs knew how to get the best out of Neil, always pushing him to get closer to "the source." Sadly, he passed away in 1995...

I think Neil made himself a very wealthy man. You don't have to buy his music or go to his shows if he is not playing what you want to hear.

I've long been saying that there's a connection between Brigg's passing and the quality control of Neil Young albums, and it continues with his latest.
Sometimes it seems that Neil is trolling us, and by "us" I mean longtime fans. Not only does he refuse to release Time Slips Away on CD and endlessly delay Archives 2, sometimes it seems that he's deliberately releasing sub par albums. And he's getting predictable and boring while acting like he's cutting edge. Following Neil has become literally like driving behind a smug, self-satisfied old hippy driving a car festooned with the usual virtue-signalling bumper stickers.

Briggs had a hand in Life and a few other subpar albums. Neil often ignored his advice, moreso as the years went on, so there's no guarantee his output from the last 20 years would have been much better.

I don't "loooove" this album because I haven't heard it.

Oh...there's a better version of "Indian Giver"? Will that one "make me shiver"?

I attended a recent concert with Promise Of The Real as the backing band. After one very tepid new number (Texas Rangers), my friend (a huge Neil Young fan) suggested that it was quite likely one of the worst songs he had ever heard. I agreed. On the plus side, another new song 'Show Me' had some real promise. A part of me wishes he would hunker down in the studio and create another really great album, but I quickly realize he has done enough already. So it goes. Sometimes the license for mediocrity is well earned. (If indeed it turns out to be another middling effort).

Neil is a modern-day Town Crier.
There should be more. Younger artists seem to be afraid of doing that anymore.

I still like your thoughts on Neil and David Briggs....makes sense. But I'm not sure about the deliberate releasing of sub par efforts. I think Neil is doing his best, but he's old, and it's just not good enough anymore. He's being prolific, trying to stay relevant, trying to say something. But, he's coming off as a crank that is short on musical ideas.

I love Neil. But the good ideas are too far between, now. I agree somewhat with a previous comment...less is more. One release every three years would produce some better records, perhaps.

He should aim for a budget vinyl release for this one. I would probably get it. I liked Indian Giver.
