A nifty turntable that I've been playing with, the Thorens TD-160 "Super" repro from Vinyl Nirvana..

Thanks to everyone who replied, one consideration I have is to keep the 774 head unmodified so only cartridges that where attached with screws underneath would do. I will certainly look at the OM- series option.
Dave I know that you have prepared TD 160's with the 774 original in the past is there any other cartridges that you recommend to your customers?
On a side note, I have another turntable set up consisting of an Ariston RD11 , SME3009 series 2 improved fixed head with a NAGAOKA MP11 BORON a fantastic cartridge recently replaced with the MP200 stylus . this was inherited from my father who bought it ex demo in 1973 . I took it in to my local Linn dealer to have new springs fitted and bearing checked, and he was very surprised how good it sounded.

Thanks Dave, I have ordered a OM--10 today and will upgrade with the OM-30 stylus, this seems the cheapest option.

These look so nice, I love my 1200mk5 (unmodded) but would swapping to one of these be a good move?

The 1200s are great examples of the direct drive design. Not a slouch at all. I would start your upgrade path by maximizing the cartridge/stylus on the 1200. After that, if you are still not happy, then it might be time to consider a suspended subchassis, belt-driven design.

Thank for the advice, yep I'll look at upgrading as I have seen numerous upgrades available for my 1200, it will never look as cool admittedly but there are options

Thanks! I'll be interested if you have anything more to report - looks like a 2M Bronze there, yeah? Same cart I asked for.
And I noticed on some thread here just a minute ago that you have a Sphinx, which is the same amp I'm using, ha!
Our speakers are at pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum, though- that's likely to be the next upgrade.

I also just pulled the trigger on a VN-150 a week ago, having a hard time waiting patiently! I got the upgraded 202 & ortofon bronze 2M and also the music hall cruise control. Going to use it with a Musical Surroundings Nova II, anyone have any experience with that mix?

The wait seemed rough but was well worth it. I'm so enjoying this table.
I also got the 202 and 2M Bronze and am most satisfied.
The Cruise Control will likely be the next little tweak I try.

Here's a photo of my VN-150 with a favorite record. I'm not nearly as good at taking photos as Dave is at restoring turntables.

Dave is a total mensch. My first table from him was a TD-160 Super with a 2M Black and I recently ordered a TD-145 with a Dynavector 10x5. It's really amazing for the price. [IMG]

Nice decks - man kinda makes you wish turntables wore out and required replacement every few years - I'd love to buy one - just have my lifetimes worth of tables at the moment.

I can't get enough of my TD-125 Long Base with the M2-12R arm that I bought from Dave. Couldn't be happier!!!!!! The biggest question I keep asking myself is why did I wait so long to pulled the trigger?

Would going from a technics sl-1600 with a stanton 681eee cart (working 100%°) to one of daves Thorens TD-160 Super reproduction tables be a move up in sound reproduction?

    no idea!
    It would sound different ,
This is because of the means of drive.
    personally i love Thorens Decks.
My friend prefers the superb bass
    control that direct drive produces.
    As always audition first.
