  1. Because there was a time when bands really thought out the packaging. So I guess since they recorded this over a few days they designed the cover over a few minutes maybe

My friend has a truck the same color as the CD. Says its easier to spot from a distance in a parking lot and easier for other cars to see on the road. It certainly jumped out at me when I went to Target to buy it. Saved me a few minutes searching for it.

I think Bowie's The Next Day remains the strongest contender for Laziest Album Cover, although this one is close.

  4. Well Target only stocks about twenty different CDs these days. :tiphat:

  5. I'll disagree here. This was a great concept and fits perfectly with Bowles artistic aesthetic. There's a great interview with the designer somewhere on the web.

The StonesĀ® just slapped on their corporatate logo

Eh, I think it's a clever concept. But if you're talking the actual time it took... Two minutes on Photoshop, tops?

Also, we're talking Bowie, the man with some of the greatest album covers of all time. You just expect more. Stones covers have always been more workmanlike, even at their peak... With obvious exceptions like Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed.

The McDonald's arches are LITERALLY the definition of "cultural icon."

A band could do this, but, if the vast majority of music is downloaded or streamed, why go to the time, trouble, and expense to create additional art for vinyl and CDs when they're a dwindling percentage of sales? As you noted, you're looking at added cost, which almost certainly will be passed on to consumers, most of whom don't care.

I'm not arguing that I don't love good album art. I do. Just sayin... few people beyond forums like these give it much thought. We're a tiny subset of a dwindling subset of buyers.

It depends on what definition of culture you're using, but in the realm of 'pop culture', which includes just about anything that's familiar to a lot of people, you're certainly correct. I was using a narrower definition, an artsier definition that I thought was more appropriate to the subject matter, which I obviously didn't communicate well. Mea culpa.

  10. Neil Young's Peace Trail is a strong contender.

Seriously couldn't care less about an album cover these days - I still haven't seen the physical product after two trips to Target and one to Best Buy since Friday. But if that's what we want to talk about on a MUSIC forum, go for it.

When I framed my TY promo poster I picked the Keith side. The green color looks so cool.

    Sorry Mick!

Just because an idea is simple to get across didn't mean it's simple itself. The Bowie cover is smart and playful.

I believe that album art does matter.
This is consistent in the Stones album cover designs - average-to-poor quality designs for a top-quality band. Quite a mis-match.

They deserve better - no - we deserve better!

Just watched this. I think it's great. But, could you drive the 67 Mustang the way she does? It looks like an automatic, in which case, she'd do some significant damage.

Stones haven't had a decent album cover since Tattoo You - this is nothing new.
