I'm mostly with you, but the deluxe edition of Coda is really great.

Bought a copy this month and I can assure you "The Ocean" (one of my favorite LZ songs) is so distorted and staticky it is laughable at how bad it is..rest of the lp sounds great though. A real shame. If Pallas pressed this, it goes great with my Nirvana Unplugged with a big click-scratch through "Something in the Way" and my absolutely filthy copy of "Nevermind" not buying anymore Pallas vinyl...0 for 3...

So those botched pressings are still out there - pathetic. I couldn't even get a distortion free copy through Dr. Rhino, so I ordered a UK pressing from Amazon UK - problem solved, but we should not have to resort to such tactics.

Yep, that's exactly what I had to do - the European pressings (Optimal) were fine.

just added the 2014 remastered CD to my library and i definitely hear some horrible distortion/static on 'the ocean' between the 1:30 - 1:50 marks.

just listened to both versions currently hosted on spotify (one of which, the deluxe version, is labeled 2014) and i don't hear it on either. the version i purchased was not the deluxe, just the standard single disc remaster. it did rip accurately in dbpoweramp.

beginning to wonder if i my copy is elaborate bootleg from a needle drop. i highly doubt it, but how else would i get the same distortion on the cd when it doesn't appear on the digital editions hosted on spotify. my cd was sealed and did have the holographic sticker.

I have the deluxe box with both vinyl and CD....whatever distortion you're hearing on the CD is even worse on the vinyl.

The distortion on the LP starts about halfway through the song and steadily grows worse until the end.

did you listen to the CD? if so, did you hear it?

appears like this is a different issue. it occurs during a guitar solo around the second verse.

should i start a separate thread for the CD since this one pertains to the vinyl?

yes...especially the end section where they go into the "jam"...sibilance heaven...and as I said, worse on the vinyl.

It also depends on the system type. When playing it on a "warm" amp, the vinyl sounds with no distortions (especially EU vinyl), as opposed to a "detailed" amp on which the vinyl (especially US one) sounds horrible.

Also matters how you speakers are set-up, some speakers will highlight issues with the source, some will not.

Thanks for posting this. Yes, I had to stop playing the record because the distortion on The Ocean was so bad. There's a little at the end of No Quarter, maybe just a bad recording or master, or potentially a bad pressing. But on The Ocean I thought that maybe I didn't clean the record well enough and needed to clean it again. It was that kind of awful distorted sound. It was that bad groove sound, more than just a bad recording or master sound. Feel better that I didn't gey a single bad copy. Thanks!

As I've said previously, the distortion was always there on The Ocean...even on original pressings. The remaster "beefs' everything up making it even more obvious.

No - it's a bonafide vinyl defect, not something brought out by a clearer, more detailed mastering. The UK pressing of this reissue does not contain the gross distortion (which someone mentioned already - actually starts at the end of NQ) nor does the CD or MFIT. Nor does the corrected US repress :)

You are correct- there has always been a bit of "sizzle" going back to the original pressings. I recall noticing it for the first time when scrutinizing the 1990 remasters. But the new LP is a whole other kettle of fish. This was frustrating for me because I never received a corrected copy from Dr. Rhino (they sent me yet another defective US pressing.) So I bit the bullet and paid out of pocket for a UK pressing - problem solved.

I have to re-listen to my copy of the remaster; I have the super deluxe box set and although I've played the bonus LP quite a number of times, I only played the proper album once.

The thread goes into some detail as to how this is a physical defect, not the regular distortion that was always there on the track in other versions.

If you have an original copy pressed in the US, then you have a problem. If you have one pressed in Europe or a US repress, you're fine.
