The Holy Modal Rounders (Pete Stampfel and Steve Weber) joined The Fugs for awhile, recording things like Boobs A Lot and New Amphetamine Shriek.

Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band.

Three members of The Band, three members of The E Street Band, two members of Eagles, two members of Cream...

And yeah, I guess it is more of a traveling supergroup circus with an ever changing lineup of members. I just had to mention it. ;)

Wilco absorbed two side project bands with existing members, Loose Fur (Jeff Tweedy with Glenn Kotche and Jim O'Rourke) and Autumn Defense (John Stiratt and Pat Sansone).

Neither a "merge" nor even a band.

There was also an almost-merger with U.K. around the A period (Eddie Jobson joined Tull, I think Terry Bozzio was asked but declined).

It was always an unlikely combo with the possible exception of Dagmar who was ideologically close to the Cow at least, but what a world of difference between

    He used to wear fedoras
    Now he sports a fez
    There's cabalistic innuendoes
    In everything he says
    Sucking at a cigarette
    Picking up a thread
    Underneath the Casablanca Moon

    and

Now is the time to begin to go forward - advance from despair,
the darkness of solitary men - who are chained in a market they
cannot control - in the name of a freedom that hangs like a pall
on our cities. And their towers of silence we shall destroy.

Now is the time to begin to determine directions, refuse to admit
the existence of destiny's rule. We shall seize from all heroes and
merchants our labour, our lives, and our practice of history : this,
our choice, defines the truth of all that we do.

(Should say I loved them both at the time though there is only one I would give much time to now...) Got to give Casablanca Moon an airing though...

Slightly OT - Slapp Happy and Faust are doing a gig together in London in February.

Back on topic - the Red, White & Blues Band, and The Beans merged together to become the Tubes - two guitarists, two keyboard players, two drummers ('til one died) but only one bassist and one singer (and the other bassist eventually returned in the late 80s to replace Fee as the singer)

What about after The Skids broke up and Jobson and Webb formed The Armoury Show with the late great John McGeoch and John Doyle from Magazine. Only recorded one album but what a majestic album Waiting for the floods was, a truly lost classic from the 80's in my opinion.

Some of Delaney & Bonnie's band merged with Joe Cocker's band and then some of them became Derek & The Dominos while also becoming George Harrison's band for ATMP.

On the other hand, that's kind of what collaborations are about - two halves coming together to create something new. Desperate Straits in particular sounds quite different than either band's individual output and is a fantastic, and fantastically odd, pop album that is an overlooked gem of that particular era.

Talking Heads and the B-52's. David Byrne produced Mesopotamia, then Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth toured as the B-52's rhythm section.

The three remaining members from the Move (Lynne, Wood, Bevan) formed ELO and just recruited new members.

At Litherland Town Hall on October 19, 1961, the Beatles performed with Gerry and the Pacemakers as the Beatmakers.

Before they were famous, the Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler would play on the same bill, and rather than end one set and begin another, members of one group would gradually join the other onstage, and after a few numbers by the Spin Travelers, members of the first group would drift off, leaving the second act.

No merger involved. More of a name change. It's like saying XTC merged with the Dukes of Stratosphear.

A metamorphosis, not a merge. Arguably Starship resulted from something like a merger between Jefferson Starship and the Elvin Bishop Group, but Elvin Bishop didn't join so maybe not.

The John Evan Band metamorphosed into Jethro Tull, which then re-assimilated members of the old group in the early 1970s. Around the same time, Procol Harum became a reconstituted Paramounts. But these aren't mergers. This is hard.

Merging with what? One band turning into another band isn't a merger. If we elide the first "e," we could say Zep 'merged from the Yardbirds.

Also possibly not a merger because the change was through attrition rather than addition, but maybe worth mentioning here: By late 1966, three of the five original Hollies had been replaced by former members of the Dolphins.

Members of Buffalo Springfield, the Hollies, and The Byrds merged in one band, while the other 2 principal members of Buffalo Springfield joined forces with former The Poor bassist (and future Eagle) Randy Meisner and session man Rusty Young to form another...then Mesiner left that band to join with a former Burrito Brother and two former members of Linda Ronstadt's band...

Lots of comings and goings between the Eagles, Buffalo Springfield, CSN(Y), Poco, The Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros, Manassas, Souther/Hillman/Furay Band...

Apparently anytime someone from one band joins/forms another band it's a "merge"?
