One of the more notorious ones was The Byrds' cover of Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." Roger McGuinn swiched the words "pack" and "pick" in the line "pick up your money, pack up your tent." When Dylan rerecorded the song in 1971, he said "pick up your money, pack up your tent, McGuinn," in response to the mess-up. When McGuinn recorded a new version with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, he switched his own name out with "Dylan"

    According to Google Lyrics its;

"None were level on the mind; Nobody up at his word"

As much as I love Jimi's version, some of those lines are really open to interpretation as to what exactly he's singing. Case in point, another lyric site claims its

"None will level on the line, Nobody of it is worth."

I think the actual lyric is "pumped a lot of plain..." As in plain (not high octane) gasoline. Pumping pain doesn't make much sense at all.

    Carl Perkins - Matchbox:

    Well I'm sitting here wondering,
Will a matchbox hold my clothes?
    Yeah I'm sitting here wondering,
Will a matchbox hold my clothes?
I ain't got no matches, but I got a long way to go

Well let me be your little dog
    Till your big dog comes
Let me be your little dog
    Till your big dog comes
When the big dog gets here
Show him what this little puppy done

    Beatles - Matchbox:

I said I'm sitting here watching
    Matchbox hole in my clothes
I said I'm sitting here wondering
    Matchbox hole in my clothes
I ain't got no matches, but I sure got a long way to go

Well, let me be your little dog
    Till your big dog comes
Let me be your little dog
    Till your big dog comes
And when your big dog gets here
Watch how your puppy dog runs (stereo mix anyhow, difficult to tell what Ringo says on the mono mix)

  12. I think changing the lyrics deliberately is OK. Changing the lyrics because you didn't hear them right is lazy.

I think the lyric is "'pane," as in propane. But websites are not unanimous.

Ike & Tina Turner really botch the lyric: "Popped a lotta 'tang"! I guess that's more, er, interesting but not what John Fogerty envisioned!

Bob Dylan - My Back Pages (verses that The Byrds sang)

Crimson flames tied through my ears, rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads using ideas as my maps

"We'll meet on edges, soon, " said I, proud 'neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now

Here's a post I put up 3 and a half years ago in a "one and done" thread. Perhaps it can finally get a good resting place in this thread.

Having "grown up" with the Beatles' version of "Searchin'", and only having heard the Coasters' version a handful of times, I have always struggled to understand the lyrics. Finally hearing the Hollies' version this week, where the lyrics are very clear, made me realize that "Searchin'" was another case where the Beatles didn't quite know the words, and made some up to compensate (similar to "Roll Over Beethoven", "Memphis", "Matchbox", etc.)

"Searchin'"really only has two verses. and the Beatles leave out one entirely ("Well now if I have to swim a river, You know I will"). The other verse mentions 6 fictional characters who are detectives, policemen, etc. The Beatles clearly have no idea who some of these people are.

Sherlock Holmes - Surely they are familiar with him, but omit him nonetheless.
Charlie Chan - His name appears in a different spot in the lyrics, but he's properly identified.
Sam Spade - Apparently Paul wasn't a Bogart fan. Paul seems to replace his name with "Simon Says".
Sergeant Friday - Paul gets this one. The original B+W "Dragnet" TV series ran on American TV from '51 to '59. Perhaps it ran on British TV as well?
Boston Blackie - This literary character also appeared in a long series of 1940's "B" movies. Paul replaces him with what sounds like "Adam B." (or perhaps "Adam V.") Not sure if there is any meaning behind this.
Peter Gunn - Points for creativity here! Peter Gunn began appearing on American TV in 1958 (a year AFTER the song was written) and does not appear in the Coasters version. Either Paul added him in, or the Beatles are covering someone who did, post-Coasters.
Bulldog Drummond - A British fictional character, who appeared in novels, films, radio, TV ... but that all clearly eluded Paul. He certainly sounds to be singing nonsense (falsetto nonsense, in fact) in place of a name he clearly doesn't know. Paul sings something like "hard hard drum".

Yeah, it could be Simon Slade (whoever THAT is :)), especially the second time around.

And yeah, for 35 years (until 10 minutes ago) I thought that was Paul doing the falsetto bit. But, upon further review, it can't be Paul since it has a tiny overlap with Paul coming back in in his normal singing voice. So John it must be, good call!

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes

No one knows what it's like
    To be the bad man
    To be the sad man
    Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
    To be hated
    To be fated
    To telling only lies

    But my dreams
    They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

    I have hours, only lonely
    My love is vengeance
    That's never free

No one knows what it's like
    To feel these feelings
    Like I do
    And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
    On their anger
None of my pain and woe
    Can show through

    But my dreams
    They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

    I have hours, only lonely
    My love is vengeance
    That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

And if I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
And if I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like
    To be the bad man

I always thought Elvis sang 'pumped a lot of babes' when I was younger in his live version of the song, naturally I assumed this was some phenomenon I may learn more about when I was much older. Heh, just turned out to be pumping gas. Silly me...
