I think this might change depending on when I am asked but off the top of my head:

    Steve Earle "No. 29"
Tim Finn "How'm I Gonna Sleep"
Squeeze "I learnt How To Pray"

Any three of the five following. They're all perfect:

"Tom Traubert's Blues" by Tom Waits
"If I Were Your Woman" by Gladys Knight
    "Dolphin" by Prince
"The Broad Majestic Shannon" by the Pogues
    "My Funny Valentine"

I mentioned this in a thread a while back, but:

"McArthur Park" - then at least I'd know what this son is about! :)

And then, maybe "Monster" by Steppenwolf, a song that seems to apply to the situation in America even more today than back when it was written.

And finally Lynn Anderson's "(I never promised you a) Rose Garden", IMO a perfect pop song marriage of lyrics and melody.
