Probably the Revenant has the pioneering epic scope to be my best film category.
Other than that, there's not many stand out to be regarded as a best film of 2016. I really enjoyed The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki, a Finnish Film about a top European standard lightweight boxer who fought for the world title in 1962 against Davey Moore. Deadpan Finnish humor in abundance and a love story, all told as close to the events as happened.

I haven't seen many of the films mentioned by others in this thread, but of the ones I have seen, I'm going with Captain Fantastic.

I just learned Moonlight is back at my regular theatre this week, thanks to its Golden Globe win, I'm sure. Great news!

I saw "Fences" on Tuesday night and it's in my Top 3 along with Manchester By The Sea and Captain Fantastic.

Denzel Washington was superb in this film (as was Viola Davis)

Hidden Figures has been the top film at the box office two weeks in a row. So even if the Oscars end up mostly snubbing it, it's nice to see audiences have picked up on how good it is.

Oscar nominations are eight days away, btw.

    Worst film
    The Witch

I really wanted to like it and I am a fan of the horror genre. Admittedly, saying it's the 'worst' might be a tad harsh. The thing is, there are several things I liked about 'The Witch', but in the end the whole film seemed like a lot of smoke & mirrors with no legitimate payoff, be it good or bad thematically. I only saw it once in the theatre. I guess the time is right for a second viewing.

Check out Blue Ruin if you missed it.

  18. some of movies I've enjoyed last year...

Army of One, War Dogs, Warcraft, Deadpool, Everybody Wants Some, The Lobster, Neon Demon, Tale of Tales, Arrival, The Witch, Touched By Fire, Keanu (as an odd tribute to George Michael before he died)...

    Films I loved:
    Deadpool
    La La Land

    Films I liked:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which I didn't see until 2016)
Zootopia (actually liked it far more than I expected)
    Secret Life of Pets
    Captain America: Civil War
    10 Cloverfield Lane
    Dr. Strange
    (surprisingly good)

    Films I didn't hate:
    Star Wars: Rogue One
    Jungle Book
    X-Men: Apocalpyse

    Films I found disappointing:
    Hail Caesar
    Ghostbusters
    Sausage Party
    Batman vs. Superman
    Fantastic Beasts
    (very dull for a $150M big-budget fantasy/adventure)
    Star Trek: Beyond
    Suicide Squad
(couldn't make it half an hour through)
Jason Bourne (even stupider and more lapses of logic than I had expected)

  25. I was kind of irritated with the film and wanted to quit watching it until around the second half. It was totally worth it in the end!
