Yep. Mick Ralphs and those booming E-chords.

His power chords have no effects. You think they sound like "junk" ?

Summertime Blues - The Who Live At Leeds - You really can't any more power chordish than that, especially when Pete modulates to the key of B and hits the open E chord ... those HiWatts are growling at that point.

What? I am asking you if you think his power chords in the song sound like "junk".
You said power chords without "effects" sound like junk.
So I guess all of the countless blues, rock etc songs that use power chords without effects sound like junk in your opinion.

Are we talking about the same thing - powerchords - a fifth with a root or combinations of ? Is that your understanding of a powerchord ? In blues ?

Yes a root and a fifth. No third. Maybe an octave on the root.
Anyway, I guess the way Mark Knopfler plays the /5 chords in Expresso Love don't qualify them as "power chords" since they are played without any volume or distortion.
I guess, it comes down to what the definition of power chord is. In mere technical terms, a dyad is not a power chord unless it is played with a lot of distortion/volume.

Personally I never play them. But surely the mere name means they have to have a bit of a kick - overdrive or distortion ? btw I'm a Knopfler fan...and haven't really associated him with them except Money for Nothing probably has one or two in ..

Some good JCM800 power chord tones on this one. Bonus: Mick Ronson's last credited appearance (the last slide solo).

Power chords from Paul Revere & The Raiders? You bet. This almost sounds like a template for The Raspberries a few years later.

The distortion is part of the "power" so it is needed, otherwise you are spot on, root, fifth and possibly octave. But the thing is that no one in this thread is really interested in any definition, so don't waste your time with it, this thread is a complete failure...
No, that is not what it means, it is also a specific voicing. I have linked to this article before, early on in the thread, but here it is again, read this: Power chord - Wikipedia »

I'm sorry, I must have missed these posts when I replied above, so disregard my comment, you are actually entirely correct, root+fifth and distortion.
