I'm not really a fan of Steely Dan, but I love their song "Reelin' in the Years". I love the vibrant folk rock melodies and amazing, golden-toned lead guitar. Unfortunately for me, none of Steely Dan's other work sounds like this. Does anyone know of any other songs that sound like this one? I'm already familiar with Wishbone Ash, and the few Led Zeppelin songs that sound kind of similar. I feel like there must be more songs like this out there, so does anyone know of any?

Does Jackson Browne's "Doctor My Eyes" fit the bill?

Is it the heavy lead guitar that makes it for you? Because the vocals and vibe of the song are one thing but Elliott Randall's leads are what make the song really special. If it's unequivocally both then you're looking at a prettt short list of tunes that are similar.

So it Goes by Nick Lowe sounds, uh, quite a bit like Reelin' in the Years, but maybe not in the way you mean...

Yikes. Folk rock with lead guitar?

Anything by the Eagles with Don Felder. The Eagles take a royal beating with rock cognoscenti, but "One of These Nights" is a great song and features an all time great lead solo by Felder .

Paul McCartney/Wings' "Magneto and Titanium Man" has a similar lope and feel

I guess I should provide a bit more explanation. Two other songs that have a similar style are Wishbone Ash's "Blowin' Free", and Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away" (the former is more what I'm looking for). It's the combination of the guitar style and the melody and vocals that I like. I totally understand that there may not be a lot of songs like that, but I thought I'd try my luck with a thread anyway. Thanks for all the help so far, by the way.

About the closest track of theirs to Southern Rock? So maybe:
    Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat

Yea, I'm scratching my head here...I can't be all that scientific about it, but my brain associates that warmth with late-70s/early-80s Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Atlanta Rhythm Section and early to mid 90s Lyle Lovett.

I'm also always open to hearing more songs with guitar like you hear on "Reelin' in the Years" or Wishbone Ash's Argus, so feel free to mention anything like that.

Thanks for the recommendations, but southern rock isn't what I'm talking about. Sorry if I'm making this really hard, I may be on a wild goose chase.

As an aside, King's X used to play "I'm Your Captain" live.

This is exactly where I was about to go next. There's gotta be something somewhere between Tolouse Street and Stampede that comes close.

    Spot on, I'd have thought.

Especially with the 'Skunk' Baxter connection.
