  1. She may not remember Whitney, but Whitney certainly remembered the fine Colombian.

Did you hear the lyrics to "Time Out of Mind"? "Hey Nineteen?" How about the ones in "Janie Runaway"? "Cousin Dupree"? "Slang of Ages"? "Fall of '92"? These are not warm and fuzzy folks. Not all of their tunes are this way, of course, but they kick up dust when they feel like it. Age has seemingly not mellowed this tendency.

Perhaps an extended layover in the mini-babylon of LV will provide inspiration for new material. And I don't mean a song about Hoover dam.

Well, you're asking the wrong guy. My response to music is different from most people (i.e. paying more attention to musicianship, then the vocal melody/harmonies and sound/style but very rarely lyrical analysis or interpretation.) Nevertheless, "Time Out of Mind" and "Hey Nineteen" were from 37 years ago.

Point is nobody else, who's contributed to this thread, thinks that there's anything unusual about Steely Dan playing Vegas. In fact, the bigger surprise is that they hadn't done this sooner.

I was looking online for the capacity of The Opaline Theatre. No luck.
All I could find was ye old Seating Chart, complete with ticket pricing.
I looked up the Wikipedia entry for The Venetian in Las Vegas.
This was the hotel where the Blue Man Group show originated?
    Cool.

Tough crowd. If a band doesn't tour, we ask why. If a band plays Vegas, we ask why. If a band wants to make a living, we ask why. Heck, it is the "music business" after all.

Give them a chance. These two guys surround themselves with incredible talent. I caught them two years ago here in Portland and they were fabulous. Money grab or not, they gave me my money's worth and I paid to sit very close. If I were in LV I'd be buying tickets. Regardless of whether or not they still have that rebellious streak they're still named after a stainless steel dildo. That's still edgy.

I don't know how often Steely Dan plays albums from start to finish - but I've seen them play Aja in its entirety, and also The Royal Scam on another date.
    Great, awesome shows.

    Makes good business sense.
9 Dan shows IN A ROW.
Lots less of the wear and tear of traveling.
A fantastic band (who were AMAZING the time I saw the Dan in 2008).

What's not to like? I've never BEEN to Vegas and have almost no desire to EVER go there, but I'd go for one of these shows!

That band was nearly all the current Dan band

Amen, comped seats for drunken loud high rollers down front.
    Typically 90-100 minute sets

At the Beacon Theatre they have done Scam, Aja and Gaucho, a rarities night, and the hits night.
Generally on tour across the country the only vary up one, maximum two songs

Any listings on each nights focus?

    Indeed

I'd love to see a number of songs always in the setlist go on a long sabbatical

Hell, there's a couple of big casinos right here in Edmonton (no, they're not on the beach;))
Yeah, us Canuckleheads are hard to please...seems to me the amount of times Steely Dan has played in Canada I can count on one hand (and, every time it's either T.O. or Montreal!)
They'd take turns: one being jovial and outspoken, the other just sitting there staring all sullen-like. Not much different from usual, in other words...

According to his book eminent hipsters, Fagan hates the grind of touring, especially the dreary hotel room aspect of it. Maybe he got the poker bug. Whatever.

No big deal and not worth getting all exercised about. Elder statesmen of music looking to make a few $$$$s as professional musicians and entertain some fans. Wish they would make another record. Everything Must Go is the only album in their discography that is less than great so it seems a shame to sign off on that one; especially as Fagen's last 2 solo albums were rather good.

In spite of Fagen's bitching in Eminent Hipster (which IMO should be taken with a large grain of salt; you can never tell with either of these guys if their being sarcastic, snarky or serious) if he hated touring so much he wouldn't be doing it. After all, he had no regrets about walking away from live performances for twenty years in 1974, did he?
Indeed. As good as it was without him, I wish Walter Becker had been involved with Sunken Condos and that it was a full on Steely Dan album. We could use one right about now...it's been too long.

Maybe they'll be perverse and refuse to play "Show Biz Kids".

Their show here in '13 was swell (still can't believe they stopped in Reno), but as tempting as it is to take a little hop down for a Vegas getaway, the tix are a little rich for my blood.

I'm a HUGE fan of Steely Dan and their music, especially Donald's "The Nightfly" album, but Donald's "Eminent Hipster" book was a TOTAL piece of sh#$, in my opinion. If he thought that he was being "cute" or "hip" with his negative view of nearly everything in his life, especially regarding touring, then do us fans a favor and stay the hell home and just make us a new album! I've long been turned off by Donald and Walter's sarcastic "interview" approach and I've often wondered why they ever bothered doing them (I'm sure just to amuse themselves)? The only time that I'm aware of either of them "playing nice", regarding interviews, is when they were on "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" and they were VERY cordial with her.

Anyone who took Fagen seriously in that book are either not true fans of Steely Dan, don't truly "get" Steely Dan, or have never met a dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker over the age of 50...

Reading over this thread, it strikes me that many who have posted have either never been to Las Vegas, or have not been to Las Vegas in a long time. I have been there twice in the past two years. Now it is one very upscale, massive hotel after another, with very high end shops, restaurants with celebrity chefs names on them, mixed in with fast food places and common U.S. mall stores, and rampant and excessive alcohol consumption everywhere. It reminds me of a college known as a party school, only with stuff for wealthy adults to buy everywhere. There are a great many European and Asian tourists.

It is a perfect place for a rock band to play. There are a huge number of adults with money getting very drunk all the time and spending money and having a party time. Many would probably like to hear some decent music while they are partying. It is a natural market for better live music.

The old stereotypes of the Rat Pack era, or what is shown in the film "Casino" for instance, bear little resemblance to what Las Vegas has become.
