First listen to CD 1 from "The Hilliard Ensemble - Ockeghem, Josquin Desprez, De La Rue & Lassus" on Virgin Classics. CD 1 - Ockeghem
Grrrrr. Facebook videos are giving me such grief!! Anyway I uploaded it to Photobucket....maybe we'll be luckier this time? I hope? http://vid201.photobucket.com/albums/aa241/Greeneyesmexico/Mobile Uploads/20170117_102625.mp4
I did some listening tests on the Vanska SACDs and I think the key at least to listening to them dynamics wise is to listen multi channel SACD. Passages get lost in the mix in 2 Channel. In Multi Channel SACD I think they sound great. The performances well that is another story. Some are good, some not so good IMO.
I guess this is one of those cases where we will have to differ in our assessments - though of course only you can decide what value it would (or would not) have added to your collection. Where I differ is in your assessment of the ensembles - which in my opinion are excellent - for one it's hard to go past the Consort of Musicke and "the delightful Emma Kirkby". The sound is also fine, with some very good remastering of those titles which needed it - so for mine it doesn't really matter if the original sound on the newer recordings was better (which is also arguable).
I've heard the same comment about hybrid SACDs being played on non-SACD players in a 2-channel setup; the recordings don't sound quite right, something seems to be missing.
I think with some of these multi channel mixes, the 2 channel mix is not given much attention. I think in most cases the 2 channel is just a type of fold down of the 5.1. I might be wrong but it sure sounds like the problem with these Vanska disks.
Sure, will keep an eye on it. However, I am pretty much out of shelf/storage space. I just realized I will need to omit one of my Sibelius cycles. (I have Blomstedt, Ashkenazy and Bernstein (SONY, in the Royal Edition series.))
Time to move to a bigger house in the upstate NY countryside (I'm guessing prices in midtown and downtown NYC are astronomical)
My CD collection is fewer than 100 to 7000 and I probably will have to stop CD buying as space is running out on me as well ...
A year ago, you'd easily convince me. But Blomstedt won me over the last time I heard the set. Plus, his set has the advantage of being very different than the other two. So, it's down to Bernstein and Ashkenazy. And it doesn't look good for Bernstein. (Which is good, for his set is in two fatboy cases. Maybe I'll just put the Bernstein in two slimline 2CD cases, then I'd have enough room for them all....)
