This actually may be a better show than those on Undead and Recorded Live.

Literally listening to this album at this very moment, six minutes after your post.

'Live It Up' is another great Johansen live lp. My wife and I saw him at the Roxy in LA during the same tour. David'said first solo album is "shoulda been a hit" classic. Of course you can say the same thing about the NY Dolls.

This is from McCartney's Venus And Mars party. The Meters also performed and I believe that's a official release as well.

With driving rock songs powered by screaming guitars, plus funny novelty songs including one about a dead dog's guts making the singer a happy boy, this is what rock 'n' roll is all about.

  18. I don't know how relatively unknown it is, but "Companion" by Patricia Barber goes down well late at night. Great recording, too.

Picked this up recently and have spun it several times over the past few weeks. Woah, what a raging performance, simply incredible. VDGG always had solid grooves on their studio albums, but these songs march forward with a disgruntled determination that never wavers. And that fuzz bass snarls and growls like an electrified tiger - I love it. Add in the otherworldly cosmic violin shadings and Hammill's unhinged vocal rants, wow... just a great LP.

Most of the songs almost fall apart midsong. Pioneers Over C is mostly chaos. Giles Martin must have loved how loud the bass was ;)

All this plus a full album's worth of songs unreleased elsewhere!

Ship of Fools was on the B side of a French single. Door came out on the remastered Quiet Zone CD, Hammill rerecorded Mirror Images and Sci Finance. The only unique song was Urban.

True, but most of those versions came out long after Vital (and the Ship of Fools single was pretty much unknown), so Vital amounted to a largely-new album at the time. And I don't think any of the other versions are a patch on the Vital ones.

I don't typically like live albums but this one is iconic for me. I'd go so far as to say, if you can have only one BBD album, this is probably the one to get.
