Prestige did not record in stereo until fairly late. Saxophone Colossus was recorded in mono in 1956 and reissued as OJC 291.
Ooooooooh. Sorry, I was misled by the fact that some of the discogs listings indicated Mono but most didn't. I didn't think to check the recording date! Makes sense.
Prestige didn't record in stereo until the late 1950s; the sound stage of their early stereo recordings is pretty primitive, with the main instruments hard left and hard right - some of their later stereo recordings also suffer from this effect. The Analogue Productions mono Prestige series only has recordings from Prestige's mono era.
Thanks!! I appreciate the feedback. I ordered the Overseas, along with McLean's 4,5,6 and Colossus. Good AP sale going on right now.
I've got a reissue called Saxaphone Colossus and More. It was issued in 1975. A double album with selections from 3 other LPs of that era. Nice liner notes by Orin Keepnews. According to the inner sleeves there were quite a few of these "twofers" released of classic Prestige recordings. I'm going to be keeping my eyes open for more of these.
And... shipping today! Booker Ervin - Exultation! Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor Just got a phone call from Karen (subscriptions). Finally!
Quiet Kenny is still not out yet, and the Rollins sounds great, although I wouldn't say its a huge improvement over the OJC, but I'm still happy to pick it up.
Received notification it's shipping now. Interested in knowing your thoughts on how it compares to the OJC (although I already ordered the AP33).
I'll probably pick up Quiet Kenny but the two I'm really looking forward to are Arnett Cobb-Ballads By Cobb and Gene Ammons-Nice an' Cool
Sorry I meant to ask are all the Saxophone Colossus ojcs monos? I think you answered this question already
Quiet Kenny is a classic Prestige title. The OJC lp sounds terrific, but based on the quality of the AP Prestige series, I will double dip and check it out.
