Spooky Tooth is a terrible name. I don't know anything about their music.

Have long been a fan of, and friends with, an LA band called ****ting Glitter whose music is in the vein of early female-fronted 80s new wave bands like Missing Persons, Berlin, The B-52's etc, with some modern electro influences. They would have been signed to a good label if they had changed their name, but refused as it was against their punk ethos. If you can track them down their albums "Free Alongside Ship" and "Open For Business" are really awesome and essential new wave.

Young people like to come up with band names that old people dislikes. It's just the way it is. It gets more gruesome for every generation. :)

In practice, no, because everyone knew about the change. It was a huge publicity boost at the time. Not saying he made his best music under the symbol but everyone knew who it was...

I didn't see the doc, is their name considered a reason why they're obscure?? Can't buy that, what with the Grateful Dead being one of the most popular live acts of all time, despite the name.

Not sure they would ever be mass appeal but i saw a support act a few years ago called "The Spitting ****s"

Cant think why they never made it.

We have a really good band on our indie site named Cased. I always thought that was sort of an offputting name.

There is also one called the Happies that is very good but I know people who hate their name.

And it's something else? Like more deliberately separate letters?

Saw them at SXSW in 2003, liked 'em, I think they were gonna change the name not long after that.

Their name was not nearly as uncommercial as that of another black Detroit punk group who called themselves The N*gg*rs (minus the asterisks). They actually played on a local TV show.

Are you referring to the band name or the album? With the popularity of all things zombie these days, that actually turned out to be a canny move for them, though I don't find anything particularly gruesome or undead about their music. Otherwise, I think that the album's name was suitably cosmic for the time period.

Thanks to this thread I now know that The Eagles of Death Metal are not anything like The Eagles or Death Metal (which has kept me from listening to them all this time.) I'll be darned.
I do remember hearing a DJ in the early 70s says something to the effect that "You know all the good band names are taken when you call your group Pink Floyd."
