First album is great. Second album blows it out of the water.

I think Nirvana is a good example of this, and it got a mention earlier in the thread. Bleach is great but Nevermind is the record of the generation - even if you may personally prefer Bleach. Bleach is a great album but it's not monumental. Black Sabbath's Paranoid is also a decent example of this, but not as pronounced.

I think if this thread is just "the first album is great but I prefer the second" it's a much less interesting question than how the OP phrased it.

Lizzy Grant doesn't count. It's basically Lana's "Juvenile Hell".

Small Faces S/T on Decca is cool... S/T on Immediate is legendary... don't consider From the Beginning a proper LP, just an odds & sods albeit a good one, rushed out by Arden when they jumped ship...

`Love`1st self titled great, the 2nd `Da Capo` even better if only for side A (although I love the `B` side). Then Arthur Lee went one better with the 3rd!

`The Waterboys` self titled 1st great album, the 2nd `A Pagan Place` even better. Then Mike Scott with a little help from Karl Wallinger went one better with the 3rd!

So that means Katy Perry's album before One Of The Boys doesn't count as well? :p

I have to disagree regarding "The Band" as well as "Warren Zevon". I consider the debut and sophomore albums of both to be great. I give the edge to Big Pink and only consider Excitable Boy to be slightly better then Warren's S/T album. Although I've never hear it, I'm lead to believe both of those Zevon albums blow away his actual debut album "Wanted Dead or Alive".

Nick Lowe's "Jesus of Cool/Pure Pop For Now People" is a fantastic debut; "Labour of Lust" is an all-time classic.

Metallica go from Kill 'Em All, a great debut album full of energy but also some cliche metal lyrics and topics to Ride The Lightning, a pure classic metal album that probably is in every metal critics' top ten of all time. Amazing sense of maturity and improved song structure as opposed to the debut.

I think some may disagree with me, but the Beatles. With the Beatles is a fantastic album. I once read in a book, I forget which, that "the Beatles had 5 years to prepare for their first album. They had 3 months to prepare for their second."

Both Blur & Oasis I would suggest.

Leisure -> Modern Life Is Rubbish
Definitely Maybe -> (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
