Very derivative stuff...Could be called 'regressive rock' quite frankly.

I voted for the Big Three but ... Pink Floyd maybe misclassified so I would go ELP or better yet add one of these:

    Utopia (the original band)
    Soft Machine
    Can

Änglagård - Hybris and especially Epilog are two of the best ever.
After Crying - first 4 albums, Megalázottak És Megszomorítottak is an all time classic.
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - first 3 albums. There is no one like Francesco Di Giacomo.

If I were to run such a poll, these would be 25 artists (maximum allowed by the system) I would put up for voting:

    Area
    Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
    Can
    Egg
    Emerson, Lake & Palmer
    Faust
    Focus
    Genesis
    Gentle Giant
    Gong
    Grateful Dead
    Henry Cow
    Jethro Tull
    King Crimson
    Magma
    Maneige
    Pink Floyd
    Premiata Forneria Marconi
    Roxy Music
    Samla Mammas Manna
    Soft Machine
    Tasavallan Presidentti
    Van der Graaf Generator
    Yes
    Frank Zappa

Still a deeply flawed list that focuses solely on the first wave of progressive rock and excludes many of my favourites, but at least it would give a foretaste of the genre's embarrassment of riches.

I might have voted "other" for a fourth: Renaissance. I'll put in a good word for Grobschnitt, Tai Phong, PFM and England. And Supertramp have plenty of moments. All the bands on the poll have one or two at least.

They're my favorite compared to all the bands listed but I'd hesitate to call them "prog."

I probably wouldn't list Jethro Tull as prog, and certainly not ELO.

Of the listed ones, I'd go with King Crimson, Genesis and Pink Floyd.

Nice list. To be picky, I'd replace Grateful Dead with Le Orme.

ELO and Moody Blues for their lush orchestral arrangements. Supertramp for their humor. I'd give Genesis an honorable mention.

The first seven names of this poll are my favourite prog-rock bands (at least if we assume that APP made Prog music). It was funny to find them in this exact order:
    1) King Crimson
    2) Genesis
    3) The Alan Parsons Project
    4) Yes
    5) Pink Floyd
    6) Emerson, Lake and Palmer
    7) Jethro Tull

But apart from my personal taste and preferences, let me endorse some of the previous messages of this thread: Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator and PFM should have been included.

Spent countless hours immersed in their music, still do.

It was always a lingering suspicion, but now I'm absolutely certain that I have no concrete idea as to what Prog Rock is.

and... oh, let's say Pink Floyd or... hey, someone mentioned Can! Let's go with Can! ... Or Floyd. Hard to pick.

I'm okay with Genesis and Yes, two favorites in the voting so far, but I don't really feel the passion for them.
I guess, at the end of the day, the only two proggy groups I can get really excited about are King Crimson and Zappa, both of whom have admirable compositional rigor, a phrase I can hardly believe I just typed, but there it is.
If Zappa even counts for present purposes. Is Zappa maybe too ironic to be Prog? Is that possible? Is Prog tough enough to bear something as corrosive as irony?
    Weigh in, dear readers...

Zappa isnt Prog. He transcends hackneyed labels like that.

Zappa is just Zappa. A genre unto himself.

Broadly speaking, I think that Zappa was doing something very analogous to prog in his own inimitable way--melding rock with classical, jazz, avant and other influences. Some of his instrumental suites (i.e. Grand Wazoo or Dupree's Paradise) strike me as being quite progressive in their way, but I understand your objection. I feel rather similarly about Can--they are one of my favorite bands, but they are sui generis, transcending cookie cutter labels. I guess it's not surprising that a lot of artists don't like being pigeonholed in this way.
