I agree 100%. I think it's a very impressive set, The liner notes are excellent, the pressings good(I've had a little warpage on mine but nothing that affects play) and I'm quite happy with the mastering. I suppose you could always do better, but I have no regrets over this purchase.
Fun stuff. The instrumentals with Renbourn are wonderful. I mean, I'm a huge fan so I enjoy having all this stuff in one place. I wouldn't want to be without it.
Are the duets with Renbourn in the same vein as the earlier Bert & John material? There were always hints that they had been working on a Bert & John II album.
Well it is not quite at that level of excellence. A bit more laid back than 'Bert And John' ; where they really sparked off each other; but i liked getting them. The bonus disc is nice but all in all, there is nothing revelatory. It is mainly alternate takes and demos of tracks on the 3 main albums that do not differ greatly from the final version. It is a nice complementary listen, but if you are hoping for a treasure trove of unreleased gems it is probably not going to deliver for you. There was clearly no bones of an unreleased album or anything like that lying in the can from that era but it is nice to get in the boxed set.
Tha Thank you for a comprehensive answer. I'm still wating for the bookback cds. I only bought it for the 4th disc, so feel pretty much held to ransom?
Slightly off -topic, but this may be of interest . . . https://www.spincds.com/coming-soon/under-the-covers-cd-52185
Anyone out there pre-ordered the Living in the Shadows CD box set direct from Earth Recordings and still not got it? I've not received the box, nor shipping notification, although it's been available for immediate dispatch on Amazon and their own website. They have not responded to a query through their own contact website either in nearly a week. Not too impressed?
Thanks, I still have heard nothing. When you click buy from there site it redirects you to Bandcamp, when you buy from Bandcamp they say you are buying it directly from the artist not them. I've raised a query and see where it gets. There seems little point in buying these as 'an early bundle package' anyway. The prices are the same price on Amazon on release.
Is it Yanch or Ghanch (G sound like Geography)? I've generally heard people say Yanch, but Joe Boyd said "Ghanch", and he should know, right?
And as heard from his own lips. Actually I used to get a bit peed off when I mentioned Bert and get pitiful looks from people thinking I was plain ignorant. Although oddly I've heard John Renbourn use both hard J and Y pronouncuation? Maybe that was to wind him up. Incidentally anybody knows why they fell out?
I think "grow apart" would be more accurate. They were different people. Not every friendship can be maintained continuously for 50 years.
