Agreed but do you mean the original UK first album or the North American version? The North American release is probably the better record but only because they put four amazing singles on it.

Right now, listening to Richard Buckner's great Devotion + Doubt, and it could be my favorite of all times .... at least for today. But 1997 has so many albums I love, could easily call it one of my favorite years for music, though I don't usually think in those terms, still, even among so many albums I love from that time, Devotion + Doubt stays at the top year after year.

I’ve really enjoyed reading through this topic, there’s certainly some tremendous records listed , but the thing I noticed most, there appears to be a lot of mentions/votes for the following:
Highway 61, Blonde on Blonde, Pet Sounds, Sgt Peppers, White Album, Abbey Road, Forever Changes, Astral Weeks, Exile.
All great albums, and all somewhere between 40 and 50 odd years old. Personally, I still return to most of these a lot more than pretty much anything that has been released over the past 35 years, and it would seem that perhaps I’m not alone in that.
Also, as so many of you have stated, it’s virtually impossible to come up with just one, (or even 20!) titles, but after not inconsiderable thought, keeping it to just 10, this is the best I could manage:

Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited
    Neil Young – Everybody Knows
    Van Morrison – Astral Weeks
    The Band – The Band
Stones – Exile On Main Street
    Joni Mitchell - Blue
    Grateful Dead – American Beauty
    The Doors – L.A. Woman
    Warren Zevon – Warren Zevon
    Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
(All dating from 1965 to 1981)

One last thing, I can still remember a weekend in early 1970, hearing Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Moondance for the first time, (this was my introduction to Neil Young & Van Morrison,) and both those albums still sound as fresh and relevant today.

While I have this on on vinyl, I never got into it. I probably never gave it a chance. Outside of the one-hit single, what else does it offer that got it on your list?

So many great songs.. Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm, Mayonaise.. the whole album is the epitome of emotionally involving, almost visceral, songwriting. Just grabs you by throat and doesn't let go.

It's a difficult/challenging listen, but I think that's part of what keeps it from getting old, tired and played out like many classic albums can get.
