I suppose the article is implying it's less likely that their envelopes would be the source of the wrong winner being called out. But the article outlines how they check the envelope results against the actual results to make sure each envelope is accurate, and then also check each other's envelopes against each other. But I was speaking to the idea that "reading the wrong name" could never happen, and this article asserts the exact opposite:

What would happen if an erroneous winner is announced during the telecast? Maybe a presenter reads a name from the teleprompter instead of the envelope (which Palance supposedly did), or maybe someone decides to coronate their own winner. PwC has protocol should such a glitch occur.

    and then later:

Should a presenter declare a false winner for any reason, they are prepared to tell the nearest stage manager, who will immediately alert the show’s producers. Cullinan and Ruiz, who spoke to The Huffington Post last week, say the exact procedure is unknown because no mistake of that kind has been made in the Oscars’ 88-year history. “We would make sure that the correct person was known very quickly,” Cullinan said. “Whether that entails stopping the show, us walking onstage, us signaling to the stage manager — that’s really a game-time decision, if something like that were to happen. Again, it’s so unlikely.”

So to me, the article is laying out how it's possible that the wrong winner can be called out, (and saying it's "unlikely" is a fair assessment considering it hadn't happened in 88 years; it would still make sense tomorrow to say it's "unlikely" statistically to happen in 2018) and goes on to explain how they would correct this mistake. The scenario they describe is pretty darn close to what ended up happening.

The article doesn't go into much details about precisely how (or by whom) the envelopes are handed out. To the degree the two PWC people seems to think an error *on their end* is unlikely, I think they're talking more about having printed the wrong winner onto a card or something as opposed to handing the *wrong* card to a presenter. I'm guessing they're imagining a "Best Picture" envelope and card where somehow the wrong winner is listed, as I'm guessing they would hope/assume/guess that the person handing envelopes out and/or the presenter would notice it if they were holding a card for a different category.

And that's precisely what Faye must have thought as he she glanced at the card. She must have lasered in right to the bottom of the card seeing "LA LA Land" and completely ignored the name written above it which she assumed was going to be the producer of the film. In the end, both Faye and Warren trusted the producers to give them the right card and tried to save the situation without much further thought.

Nobody cares but ''Rules Don't Apply'' is great. I prefer ''Town & Country'' to any Best Picture of the last 15 years.

I know, I've watched the slip-up coverage on Roku with all of the major news channel's sites.

What I'd really love to see, is an unedited shot of the stage for the entire Best Picture affair.

Most of the coverage I've been able to see has ABC's camera edits, and so, it's hard to see, when the stage directror "escorts" Faye from the stage. I thought it was Academy protocol for the presenters to stay on stage until the award recipients had finished their acceptance speeches. Perfect Storm of an incredible snafu with older actors. BTY, Faye looked marvelous in that white dress!

    Yes, douchy....

But, maybe, after witnessing Warren's "Senior Moment" with the first "reading" of an award card that night, that, he felt like he should take command, and "show how it's done" when the proper award card came along....

Warren Beatty... is a long time Hollywood Insider... he would know who is, and who is not a Hollywood Producer, i would think..

Long time insider, yes. Is he necessarily still "in the loop" with all the new names and faces today? Highly doubt it. The guy has practically been out of the scene completely for the last 10+ years. I don't want to blame Warren but if we must---then by default we'd have to blame Faye as well. She saw the exact same card and went ahead and said "LA LA Land." So who's really at fault...the guy who knew something was fishy or the person who ignored the error and read it anyway?

She totally deserved the Oscar for her work in My Cousin Vinny. Anyone who thinks she didn't has no understanding of how freaking hard it is to do comedy.

The TMZ article describing the rehearsals does make it seem a bit more likely that Beatty was, only when presented with the opportunity, slightly "punking" Dunaway by letting her read the wrong name. A sort of "If you want to read the name so badly, then go ahead!" sort of thing.

I don't understand why anyone, especially an industry veteran, would fight over who gets to be the one who gets to say the winner, but it is interesting if the TMZ story about rehearsals is accurate. The idea that Dunaway rushed it because she didn't want Beatty to "steal" the moment and say it himself makes the myriad of "Beatty announces wrong name" headlines ironic for *multiple* reasons.

She was great in that film. I didn't even know there was any sort of controversy over her win.

It was the combination of her being a newcomer up against four heavyweights (Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave and Miranda Richardson), and the film not being the kind of thing you think of as a potential Oscar winner (despite it getting that nomination). Her win really came out of left field for "cinephile" people, and I think Judy Davis was widely expected to win (for Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives).
